Thanks Barbara! No plan art journaling might just be one of my favourite things in the world. ;)

Thank you so much Donna! This is my favourite way of creating. No plan art journaling always leads me down the road of my inner world and personal themes.  It's often very clarifying, because I'm not great at feeling my emotions. I have to see them haha!

A great selection of facial expressions you created Jerney. The happy guy in the corner makes me smile every time  look at him.  I love how you can easily conjure up a bunch of miniature portraits with lovely details and depth. Bravo!

Thank you so much dear Grant! He was also a wonderful surprise to me, he reminds me of the smiling buddha haha! Both my mom and grandma had one and they would put a coin underneath them for good luck. It’s all practice, I’m obsessed by quirky faces. If you do it often enough, it feels effortless. But for me it’s also a bit of a search most times. 😉

Wow Jerney. Love how you've pulled all these quirky characters together. Is that the thread of clarity that you've unravelled or still unravelling?                             The colours are wonderful:)

Thank you so much Jennifer! I love that you saw the thread of clarity. Yes, always. It’s a life time of unraveling and it’s impossible to do outside of human connection. Both good and bad. There are always lessons to be learned. I’ve always thought the saying that life starts at 40 was a bit cheesy, but now at 46 I understand what they mean. ☺️

These faces…. Have you been reading the NY Times? So much character in each face and such a mood over the crowd! Also, the connections through veins and arteries seems to unite them into either a mob or all the characters carried inside a person’s psyche? Good job! Best, Judy PS Saavy song reference also!

Thank you so much, Judy! No, I'm a bit cross with Mainstream Media. What was the article about?  Yes, my intuitive art is always very connected to my inner world. Often I don't even understand what's going on until a few days later haha! No plan art journaling is a great way to get things to the surface. Have you tried it?

Ohh and yes, I'm a big music lover, songs often pop up in my mind as I look at my art. Same thing with my previous class as I was working on those ink blots. 

Have not tried no-plan-art which sounds scary to me. I’ll try it. As a fan of Jung, I’m open to encountering inner life. ** Not ONE article but the entire collection of news everywhere/all-at-once. I try to avoid doom-scrolling the news, but I want to know what point we’re at on any given day in terms of all humanity in very indeterminate states and with money the overwhelming incentive for man. Let’s keep tuneful! Today as  was having two posts inserted for new back molars, for some reason “Battle Hymn of the Republic” came to consciousness. No idea why, but it persisted. No worries, we're in my classroom now! No I didn't see an e-mail? But I'm a bit chaotic.  Ohh give it a go! In this class we take t step by step and no need to make it have meaning or anything. Just some good fun art time in your own style with my demos as inspiration. It's really an interesting process. Yes I like to keep up with some topics as well, I'm mainly anxiously following the people in Iran right now. I hope they can free themselves from that awful regime finally.  Yes! Tunes! Haha so you also get sort of theme songs to your life handed to you on a silver platter! Nice! Phew I'm not that big of a musical girl but I looove Jesus Christ Superstar! Although I think that might be a rock opera. I did see miss Saigon many years ago which was impressive! I appreciate lots of genres. Classic and psychedelic rock, Triphop, well.. anything that sounds good to me, really. I'm very excited to see Tori Amos again inApril. That woman is a Siren, I swear. She gets half the room crying like a baby haha! I'm also very lyrics minded. What are your favourites?

Yes, Dear, we are in YOUR classroom, but we’re still on SkSh which definitely has an impact on muting free speech. And that’s not to mention the kinks in the overall user interface and platform design. ** In my last job, I partnered with Trent, my husband, on running a non-profit that addresses electronic portfolios and also teaching and learning. It grew into an international project. One of the things I did involved a very complex member management system, so I’m keenly aware of dealing with such sites. ** Also wanted to comment on your concern for citizens of Iran. I share overall concern about people getting the short shrift in the Middle East as I did an educational project in Riyadh and became aware of the struggle Palestinians endured, many members of families of my friends in Saudi. That work at Brown started around 2000, and my first trip of many was in January after 9/11. Even back then, people neighboring Israel were suffering, but not like now. So, I deeply empathize with what people suffer in that part of the world. ** (Those two dots signify a new paragraph, btw.) Now I urgently fear for US citizens in the US citizens and the violent storm-troopers in cities… On top of several personal traumas that sent me back to doing art for self-healing, the anxiety is high for all my country is currently losing. ** That’s it for now. I guess. Music is a happier topic, huh? I’ll have to tell you about taking my 13 year-old granddaughter to a Dylan concert another time. Be well and thrive, Judy

Oh yes I know what you mean. But I don’t think we’ve been pushing the line so far. 😉 Yes, there’s too much suffering in the world on all sides of the spectrum. We as humankind have still so much to learn, I really hope we’ll get there some day. Yes making art is so vital for emotional regulation. Keep at it. It might not “fix” things, but it helps us to cope with life. At least it works that way for me. It feels like the processing we do when we’re asleep but in a more conscious way. Yes music is more uplifting haha! Oh do tell. I saw him a few years ago but I was a bit disappointed. Maybe he had a bad day. I hope you two had a wonderful time!

OMG! I have so much I would add, on each succinct point you made, but remember (please?) my academic discipline in part was writing and that’s what I often taught, so I’m wordy 🤪. Also, this is a poor writing-space in general. ** Let’s start w/ Dylan! I got my 13 year-old granddaughter, Amalia (Ama) to watch A Complete Unknown w/ me. She actually watched. It floored me when she acquired a couple Dylan vinyls. Both of those are among my favorites too, early Dylan. We actually conversed about favorite Dylan songs. She named some that are my favorites too! “Desolation Row”? NO WAY! Mine too. What I listen to when I’m depressed. Kid’s got good taste. I found out Dylan was doing a concert about an hour away at some big center in Manchester, MA. Bought us tickets after we examined current play-lists. Looked good. It was Ama’s first concert ever, so I really wanted her to have fun. The highlight of  outing was when we chose twinsie tees. Bob was not even a disappointment. He rated far below that. He did play the harmonica a bit. He’s over 80, so he sat playing a grand piano. Can’t fault him for that at his age. But we were put off by the chandeliers on each side of the piano AND the bright light on his face which made it impossible to see his face. AND, he wore a black hooded cape that further obscured seeing him. ALL that I could have dealt with, but you couldn’t recognize even one song. Once in a while you’d get one snippet from a song that sounded like it belonged there. Nothing was sung to any tune we recognized either. So, I thought, OK Bob, you gonna hide your face, act like Liberace, not be there for your audience, BUT AT LEAST deliver the songs we came to hear. I have been a major fan since the 60s and know all the lyrics through Nashvile Skyline and maybe one or two more. But Dylan was atrocious when we saw him! We left after Dylan to avoid traffic, but we were actually enjoying Willie Nelson. I should have titled this narrative something like “Where’s Bob?” which was something we pondered while he was on stage. That’s it for now. Stay well, Judy PS Where do you live?

Oh I hear you Judy, it's strange to see what's happening to our humanity at the moment. So different from the nineties. It wasn't perfect, but now it seems to spiral out of control.  Your Bob Dylan experience is spot on! I downplayed it a bit with the disappointing assessment haha!  Yes, indeed all he played was his weird love boat music (with the exception of one classic Bob Dylan song somewhere in between). He didn't connect to the audience at all. Just waggled from his piano to wherever he thought he should be in the moment with a sour face.  I've never seen another artist completely ignore his audience before or since. It was surreal. I live in Antwerp in Belgium, but I'm a Dutchie with Indonesian and Scottish roots. 😁 Where do you live?

Gosh, Jerney, We’ve covered enough that I wish I was in a better writing space so I could reply more fully in our conversation. So much to talk about! My dad’s father, a chef, came here from Scotland, so we’re both part Scot. On the other side are Danes who emigrated to Canada (OH! CANADA!  Hear the music. See a tear form in my eye!). Those Danes came to basically nothing and created a settlement, New Denmark, in New Brunswick. They felled trees, built houses and later became potato farmers. Went to Canada a lot when I was a kid. I’ve never been to Antwerp but have longed to go to that part of the world and to see Scandinavia as well. Have you been to Denmark? Indonesia? Your name is great, and I wonder which side of your heritage it came from? What languages do you speak? I used to travel lots but haven’t taken a trip since Covid. Your comment about art and emotional regulation is where I’ve been planted for a while. Art makes all the difference! Tell me about Antwerp and what you enjoy. Was Dylan in Antwerp? I still love his music and recognize he’s acts like a jerk. His concert face is not his best self! I’ve been to 2 Paul McCartney concerts which was truly almost as good as a whole Beatles concert. He also sang songs from Wings. My theme-song is “Hey Jude,” so.. just WOW! Floored me! Next time he and his band came, we took our grandson James. I raised those grands on Beatles! Even had a soft instrumental “Baby Beatles" CD to play during their naps.I hope Paul comes again. Those concerts were beyond anything I could have imagined, and hope Paul comes back to Boston and plays at Fenway Field again. We want to take both James and his sister, Amalia who deserves a good concert after the Dylan experience. See, I have written so much here, and my keyboard on this laptop is so jumpy and I may miss typos. Hi Judy! What a coincidence that we both have Scottish roots! I have visited Scotland a few times (mostly Orkney though), but one time I want to our clan's Fatlips Castle (though it seems more like a tower to me haha) on the borders in Hawick. It was fun to see!  I've also been to Bali in Indonesia, though our family was from Java. I liked the buddhist influences though, they're warm and relaxed people. :) And don't worry about any typos, I didn't notice any and everyone makes them every now and then. I mainly speak Dutch and English but I'm learning Spanish at the moment. I wish they would have offer this language in high school. I like it so much better than French and German (I can understand both a little but I don't speak it well enough). Do you speak other languages? Yes Dylan was in Antwerp! I love living here, it's the best place that I have lived so far. It's a city but the centre is quite compact so I can walk everywhere. There's gorgeous art nouveau architecture all around me. My favourite building is quite theatrical and for some reason they have built a balcony resemble the front of an old ship. You'll probably find it if you search on "art nouveau architecture Antwerp". It's so surreal and I love to pieces haha! There are also lots of nice restaurants and bars in my neighbourhood. Some nice museums (although I think there could be more, since we're in a well known city). The atmosphere is relaxed but vibrant. Especially in my neighbourhood. I didn't know Rhode Island was a state! I was under the impression that it was similar to Staten Island. So thanks for educating me haha! How did your family end up in the States? I've never been to Denmark (or Scandinavia, my tropic genes would freeze haha) but I liked learning it for a while on Duolingo. It has lots of similarities with Dutch and English as well. And even Flemish (taste, flask). It was a fun puzzle but if a Danish person would speak to me I would be lost because of their dialects. Have you ever tried it? Thanks for the tip on Paul McCartney, I love the Beatles! I hope you can take your grandkids to him soon. :)

Sorry for the late response. My excuse: I have been organizing 20+ years of  scrapbooking papers that have not been used for at least 10 years --, cardstock, embellishments and projects started but not finished. This is a heavy duty project that makes my back ache. Paper is heavy, but also useful for more recent artistic interests, but not\ if I don’t know what’s there! So much of that *STUFF* can be diverted to more interesting art projects, and with many boxes of printed photos, it could also be used for stories about olden days. ** I am also in the midst of sorting and starting a project I started in graduate school when I took a course on literary non-fiction and wrote my piece using letters from my brother who was in the army in Germany and who died in a car accident  just 5 months before his army discharge Naturally that had a huge impact on my life since I was only 8 when he died. My mother did not want to throw the letters away and asked if I’d burn them in my fireplacr. I freaked out. NOOOOO! But they remain preserved in a box, every one of them since he entered the army, and still unread by me. That is a gigantic project, but it is one I need to give more priority to than sorting scrapbooking supplies to repurpose for collage.  ** Yes, Danish, Garman and English are related through Indo-European linguistic roots unlike French and Spanish with Latinate similarities. English is such a mongrel since England had so many invaders during its early histsory. (Hubs did a post-doc in linguistics.) ** You are waaaay ahead of me on languages. The joke goes like this: Question: How many languages does a tri-lingual person speak. Answer: 3. Next question: How many languages does a bi-lingual person speak. Answer: 2. Final question: How many languages does an American speak? Answer: One. Yeah, sorta humorous but very sad. I took French in high school and still recognize a few words, but would not do well speaking French. I recognize words in Latin, that “dead” language, but only so far as necessary in terms of commonly used prefixes, suffixes, academic abbreviations, and other stuff I barely remember now. You are to be envied! ** When I was a little girl and my Danish-Canadian grandmother cared for me, I would ask her to teach me some words, and I actually have those handy for memory! So, if you want to have a VERy limited convo in Danish, let’s talk about the baby words for fingers! LOL!!! ** Again, apologies for not writing back sooner. ** I’m not nuts about having anything personal in any public site. Net safety and impositions on users has increased pr4obably a thousandfold since I was teaching about how great the Internet was as a resource for teaching. More humor, and then I have to sign off — Question: How do you know you are really not totally old-school online these days? Answer: When your granddaughter, age 14, complains about all the crap to deal with each time you have to update apps, or worse, do a whole system update! (Yes, that really happened this past week and gave me a bit of comfort.) ** I enjoy hearing from you and getting to know you. I will be in one of your classes eventually, but I have a list of basic stuff I have pledged to learn how to do first, like using acrylics and other mediums besides watercolors. ** Take care, my friend, and please forgive my delay in response, but write back. Oh Judy, please don't apologise for prioritising living your life! :) I also can't manage to reply each and every day, it gets overwhelming when I do (I have tried many times because I love the conversations). Organising is so important to actually use our art supplies and those papers can get a huge mess. I know, I have tons of vintage ephemera everywhere haha! I'm glad that you're taking steps to use yours. A few months ago I also organised my studio and my messy open shelving in particular. I bought two old suitcases to hide my magazines and other supplies that I don't use that often but look very cluttered. It took me 4 days and my space feels much more inviting now!  I'm so sorry about your brother. Good job on preserving his letters, it sounds like a project of love. Will you read them eventually? This type of project is so good for the never ending healing path. I wish I could give you a big hug. I've heard that American joke often but honestly, with such a huge country to travel and a lot of people overseas who speak your language I kind of understand! And I don't know about being way ahead of you, I still have a lot to learn before I can actually have a conversation in Spanish. But I do enjoy learning it. :) Haha yes let's have a very limited Danish chat. You'll talk about those fingers and I will respond with "be careful"! :D Yes online privacy is important. chatting about the birds and the bees won't get us in trouble, but I've seen concerning developments about, for example, political views. Both from the authorities and random people with opposite opinions and people actually having to hide and move because of their opinion. It can be scary on here. Ah yes the app and OS updates. I was cursing myself because after a mandatory update on Adobe Express and an IOS update to even being able to update the app  it doesn't even work! Also the IOS need more and more space each and every time, it's getting ridiculous. Especially since we can't upgrade our memory like with Android. I also enjoy our chats and let's agree that we return to them whenever we have the headspace to do so! It's all good. :)  And don't be so hard on yourself! There's always plenty to learn but we also need some time to play to keep things fun. ;) Until we meet again!
