The Hand Journey
To be honest, I didn’t think this class was going to be super helpful at first— It is just 25 minutes! And the exercises seemed pretty simple, but I stopped myself and just do the exercises since Kate is a pro and I am so glad I did!

The 1st exercise was super helpful. What made the difference was how Kate described the drawing of the plan and adding the little circles to help give the hand more dimension and help with fingers placement. The drawing the fingers as mittens really does help a lot and I kept having to remind myself to do that. So watching it being taught it different that’s when you actually do it.

The Silhoutte exercise was also super helpful. I really enjoyed this one. It took the stress of drawing in everything perfectly and stressed focusing on the main shape the hand is making and working your way in.

Yeah the third exercise was very hard for me because I felt like I had to make
the shapes look like hands somehow before drawing in the black. I tried. The objective was to let loose and not be so stressed with hand drawing! SO mission accomplished!

The reference images are from unsplash.com. This was also a fun exercise. I got easier as I went along. Really seeing the shape of the palm, and the mittens and the circles for depth. The woman’s pink hands are very not feminine looking as on the reference, but I think that the next lesson, helped me realize that you can stylize it to represent what you see more clearly.

I took a photo of my own hands and reference some European noble lady hands for my character. I was able to make the fingers slimmer and tried to portrait a character I haven’t fully developed for my next Webtoon. Can you guess the character?
**spoiler, it is a Cinderella remake so I wanted to have a shy girl with the cleaning rag.
Hands down, a wonderful class (pun intended) . I will be taking other classes from this instructor and will continue to apply the fundamental skills I learned here.
