Question? I see you (and literally everyone else) use a LOT of tracks when editing. Can you please explain why? I don't get why to use 6 when you can do everything u can do with 6 with 3. Also, you're crazy at editing! "The Gardener" is amazing!

Awe, thank you Michelle! I will probably create a lesson on track organization, something I admittedly have only been getting better at doing recently.

I typically try to organize video and audio on each track according to the different things I'm trying to accomplish. IE. More so for audio in this case... I have music on one, ambience on another, high-frequency sound effects and low frequency on their own etc. 

Using different tracks allows me to apply different types of effects and filters to each track, ie. high pass filter, reverb

For video tracks, I'm organizing most of the storytelling shots on the first few and adjustment layers for color and effect on the upper ones. Technically I don't need this many video tracks and every project is different.

The way I see it, the timeline is your canvas so place the tracks where they work best for your workflow. Using more tracks and "checkerboarding" shots can help remind you what each shot or layer is for and make cuts and clips easier to see. In this timeline I probably would have organized it slightly differently or cleaned it up a bit more!

Hi Mark, I think it depends also on who is editing, if you prefer to keep all of the action to one video layer and the project allows for it then that's a fine way to go. With some projects especially ones with limited footage to work with, I'll sometimes stick to using one video layer. When it comes to very complex projects (say documentary work) it can get extremely complex with interview footage, different angles, b-roll, multiple characters, titles etc. not to mention the audio. That type of work requires more and visual organization to keep on top of all of the different visual and audible elements. It's all about what you prefer and what project you are working on.
