The Absurdist View of Life

The Absurdist View of Life

What if I began living my life with the mindset of an absurdist?

As a college undergraduate, I studied philosophy; it was mind-blowing and exactly the kind of education my small town would not have liked me to find while I lived there.  I felt deep happiness at deeply exploring the profound topics.  However, fear crept in at the edges.  My fellow university classmates kept asking, “What are you going to do for a job?”  And it wore on me.  I would have followed my dreams.  I would have pursued philosophy and music vigorously had fear not weighed on me.

Now, I face numerous responsibilities as a husband, father, and educator- and it’s hard to imagine jumping back into the fold.  However, I want to make strides toward those two realms.  I plan to write and record more music with philosophical themes.  I also plan to either write a blog or find a position where I can contribute to philosophical research.  I know that I have potential in both areas, but fear of failure and the lure of safety have always held me back.

Today, I spoke with my coworker, an instructional coach, about the same notion.  She wants to be a business coach and has sat on her coaching certification for more than 10 years without actually using it.  And time continues ticking by.  We agreed- we have to act on those desires to do what we REALLY want.
