Texture Project

Texture Project - student project

I plan to add more to this project as I move through the exercises and videos.

Image 1: This texture assignment was fun. My 7-year-old really got excited about suggestions of things I should try getting a rubbing from or fottage. Replicating it was tricky! It definitely is similar. On the whole I'm pleased with my first attempt. I am excited to grow!

Image 2: This exercise was so insightful! I started out trying to match the color tone of the rock with the shading...and then realized about halfway through filling in the rocks the tone wasn't so important as using values to pull rocks forward and push rocks back, and overall using the shading to give the rocks depth over color. I tried to give a sense of the irregularity of the rocks, but I think my drawing smoothed out the rock surfaces more than they are in reality.

Image 3: I really started to feel like I was getting the hang of texture and values in this exercise! Using the different shading techniques, especially something as simple as hatching and crosshatching to give something depth is so amazingly simple and yet creates such an effect!

Image 4: Ok, metallics were a surprising challenge from me. I keep wanting to shade for tone and not depth and so creating the right texture for the metal was....well I was really relying on contrast to try to convey it. And small movements make a big difference in how the subject looks. :) I might need to try this again to really get it.

Class Project!

Ok, technically I didn't follow instructions. I was not sure which object to pick, so I figured I'd draw something I had nearby. And once I drew the bear...I just couldn't bring myself to erase it. I mean come on, it is darling. So I put my sketch book on the other side of the room and looked at it in all directions to see what I could "transform" the shape into and try a different texture. I kept seeing four fingers. So I drew my left hand...mirrored. And I must say, I've never drawn a hand in perspective so accurately before, nor have I ever shaded it in a way that make it look semi realistic before. This class is legit and has done an amazing number on improving how I draw texture in a sketch! Thank you a million, Jennifer Moorhead! I truly appreciate the time you took in making this class, and the references you made to historical pieces. I also LOVE how your drawings can be beautiful (and quite realistic) without being exact, it has definitely shifted my perspective on my drawing.
