Talon

Talon - student project

The hardest part of this project was working out a way to characterize natural creatures. Not characters with emotions and goals beyond their very need for survival. Just flat creatures whose only purpose story-wise was to put the protagonist and their friends in a tough situation. I think if I were to attempt this activity again, I would try to write a creature that could be further characterized.

Andrea:

She is a young woman, who cares about her boyfriend and her friends. She wants to protect those she cares about. Her own maternal instincts born from a desire to become a mother herself one day made her the woman she is. Her mother mentored her desires for a living relationship and a desire for family. Her best friend is Hayley, a spoilt bratty girl who Andrea hopes she may one day “fix”. Their enemy is the winged creatures who hunt in the jungles near the pond. Andrea wants to escape the horror of the winged creatures. They believe in their boyfriends ability to protect them, stemmed from the blade he carried with him. Their backstory is that they came to the jungle on a weekend getaway. Planning to make camp around a pond after an evening swim. Their only tool is their own two feet, and the machete Owen brought with him. They are afraid of the winged creatures. After Hayley is killed by the first winged creature, they realise they need to get out of the jungle. Civilisation is where they are from. The jungle is where they were headed, before everything went wrong. Initially they went to the jungle to escape from daily life and have a nice getaway, after the creatures attacked they realised they needed to get to safety. They walked through the jungle for two hours. Decisions are made in the moment based on fear, desperation and hope.

Winged Creatures:

They are winged, monstrous beasts, who care for nothing but their own grim satisfaction and desire for blood. They only care to protect themselves, and their kin when necessary. It was their nature that bore them this way, their hunter-killer instincts. Their enemies are those who trespass on their land. They want to protect their territory and feast upon anyone, or anything that trespasses on their domain. It is their nature to protect and to prey on weaker entities. They have always lived in the jungles, and it is where they will remain. It its in their nature to kill and protect, there is no deeper meaning behind their actions. They are merely natural beasts who act as they are birthed. They were always here, and always will be here.

Draft:

Light burst through the canopy above, splintering the darkness like shards of porcelain. With a powerful swing, the machete carved a path through the fierce vegetation. The blade bit deep into the earth, severing the thick, ropy tendrils that entwined it in a stubborn embrace. The sharp-edged leaves, vibrant green and scimitar-like, danced in the breeze. The air felt heavy with the scent of crushed leaves and damp earth as Owen carved his way through the dense, almost impenetrable jungle. He swung with purpose, his muscles bulging beneath sun-kissed skin. His broad shoulders flexed like steel, propelled by a determined stroke.

Andrea, his girlfriend, marched through the thick underbrush. Her footsteps crunched leaves and snapped twigs. With a graceful leap, she vaulted over a fallen log, its gnarled bark polished smooth by wind and rain. Pausing to catch her breath, she took a sip from her water bottle. Her eyes stayed focused ahead, looking for their destination. Still, she couldn't help but glance at Owen, who kept hacking at the plants in their way. "Is that necessary?" she asked.

For just a flicker, Owen's confident smile wavered. Yet, his machete kept slicing through the undergrowth with a whip-like crack. "Not really, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying myself," he quipped, a playful grin spreading as his eyes sparkled with mischief.

Andrea's best friend Hayley slowed her pace beside her. With her legs screaming in protest, she let out a huff and asked, childlike, "How much further?"

"Almost there, Hayley. I think I see the clearing up ahead," Owen called out, his voice steady.

"Can I have a go?" Daniel, Owen's younger brother, chimed in. "I want to swing the machete; it looks sick!"

"Are you serious?" Owen shot back. "I can't trust you with this! Mum would kill me!"

"Oh, come on! Just let me hold it for a bit," Daniel pleaded, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

"I reckon we should give it to him. If he hurts himself, we've got a good excuse to bail," Hayley suggested with a playful grin.

"You know, you didn't have to come," Owen said, a hint of annoyance in his voice.

"Be nice," Andrea interjected, shooting him a stern look.

Before long, to Daniel's dismay, they broke free from the jungle's suffocating grip. A sweeping glade opened up, its lush grasses swaying gently in the warm breeze. At the centre, a sparkling pond shone like a precious jewel, reflecting the vibrant flora around it. A gentle waterfall flowed over smooth stones, its soothing sound creating a calming atmosphere in the air.

Andrea's eyes sparkled with awe as she took in the scene, whispering softly, "It's beautiful."

Daniel wasted no time, shedding his sweat-soaked shirt like a snake. His lean, sun-kissed torso was revealed, steaming from the heat. Then he hurled himself into the cool, crystal-clear pond.

Owen's laughter echoed through the serene atmosphere. His eyes crinkled at the corners, like paper, as he dropped his backpack onto the lush green grass at the pond's edge. "Jeez, he didn't waste any time," he said, a broad grin stretching from ear to ear.

Andrea, with her raven hair tied back in a cheerful ponytail, wore an infectious smile spreading across her face. "He's got the right idea, though; you've got to admit," she said. She peeled off her sweat-drenched hiking shirt, revealing a vibrant coral swimsuit.

Hayley, dipping her toes in the water, muttered under her breath, "Can you blame him? We've just spent two hours hiking through this stupid jungle."

"True, but look at this view!" Owen said, then tore off his clothes.

With the sun showering them in warmth, Andrea and Owen sprinted up the hillside. Their playful banter floated through the air, mingling with the gentle mist from the nearby waterfall. As they approached the edge, excitement surged, and with a shared whoop of delight, they launched themselves into the air. Bodies arcing like birds, they plunged towards the sparkling surface below. The splash cascaded around them, a joyous explosion, as the cool water enveloped them. Laughter bubbled up from beneath the surface. Their carefree spirits shone through the water's embrace.

***

Time flowed like a lazy river as they unwound by the pond. The pond's glassy surface mirrored the cerulean sky, a flawless reflection. The sun bestowed warmth, its rays enveloping them in a cozy embrace. Laughter and light-hearted chatter floated on the breeze, punctuated by joyous splashes.

"Okay, let's set up our tents for the night," Owen said, his voice bouncing off the rugged rocks around the pond.

Hayley's eyes darted wide with dread as she faced the tragic scene. Torn and waterlogged fragments of linen lay scattered around, like fallen soldiers. Shredded pieces from their clothes and backpacks lay lost and forsaken. The once vibrant fabric now hung limp and lifeless, like defeated warriors, drained of colour and soaked through.

Andrea's voice cracked with a mix of fear and fury. Her gaze swept the chaotic scene. "What on earth did this?" she demanded, her eyes darting around for any sign of the assailant.

Owen's face turned as pale as a winter sky, worry etching his brow. "I've got no idea," he said, "but I've got a feeling it's not good." He nodded towards the ground, where the enormous talon marks piercing the mud looked like the calling card of a nightmare.

Daniel crouched down, scanning the contents of the torn bag with his eyes. He pulled out a shirt, its fabric creased and worn, but not as badly damaged as the one he'd thrown aside earlier. He threw it over his shoulders, the shirt hanging loosely around his frame like a makeshift cloak. He then grabbed a pair of shorts, the left side ripped down the middle, and carefully covered his legs with them. The others watched him, then did the same, each rummaging through their own bags to find something to wear.

Hayley's eyes widened as she stared at the wreckage of her phone. Water dripped from the shattered screen, like tears from a broken heart. In her mind, her voice echoed like a ghost - "My phone!" - a desperate plea for a miracle that would never come.

With her brow furrowed, Andrea turned to Owen, anxiety clouding her gaze. "What do we do now?" she asked.

Owen remained as calm as a tranquil sea. "Let's head back to the car," he said, giving a gentle nudge to hurry their departure.

Daniel's eyes were fixed on the sky, oblivious to everything else. His voice barely broke the silence as he murmured, "There's something above us." Owen followed his gaze, his heart racing. A large winged creature hovered ominously, its shadow dancing across the clouds. Andrea's eyes were fixed on the spot where the ominous shadow had fallen. For a heartbeat, time froze, and they each held their breath.

The colossal winged creature soared through the air, its powerful wings beating in strong strokes. The beast let out a piercing screech that sent shivers down their spines and made their stomachs churn with dread. Hayley, still clutching her broken phone, looked around in confusion. "What was that?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Daniel pointed skyward, a silent alarm before terror took hold. In an instant, a monstrous creature swooped down, its wings thrumming like a drumbeat of doom. With talons sharp as razor blades, it grasped Hayley tightly, jerking her upwards.

Her blood-curdling screams sliced through the air, fading to whispers like dying embers. "Hayley!" Andrea's desperate call was drowned out by the whoosh of wings, a thunderous symphony of chaos.

A frenzied flock swooped down, pecking and tearing at Hayley's frantic form with merciless precision. Their hooked beaks ripped through her clothing and skin, leaving her a grisly collage of blood and despair.

Even after her wails had fallen silent, a haunting echo lingered. Her lifeless body hit the earth with a sickening thud. The ground shook as the survivors stood frozen. Their faces pale with disbelief as they struggled to come to terms with the brutality they had seen.

***

They sprinted like hunted prey, unleashing a fury that had lain dormant for years. Owen's knees pulsed with a relentless intensity, his back burning like a wildfire. Each desperate step sent sharp stabs through his shoulders, eroding his resolve.

Every few hundred metres, Daniel's legs buckled beneath him. He was sent tumbling to the ground as he stumbled over hidden rocks and snagging twigs. His hands scrabbled desperately at the earth. Scraping against its unforgiving surface and leaving raw wounds in their wake.

"Which way was it?!" Andrea shouted, her voice thick with urgency. Her eyes darted wildly through the jungle, scanning the dense undergrowth and twisting paths.

Daniel rushed through the damaged flora, his feet pounding the earth as he navigated the maze of torn branches and splintered trunks. The machete's trail of destruction was clear in the shredded leaves and severed vines that hung limply from the remaining stems.

"This way!" Owen's voice pierced the silence, and Andrea fell into step beside him as they followed Daniel, their eyes fixed on his back as he walked away. The narrow path of dirt and debris unwound before them, leading them through the devastated landscape.

A blood-curdling screech shattered the peace above, sending chills down their spines. Six-winged beasts soared through the dappled sunlight, their scales flashing like jewels. They cut through the ancient treetops, causing the massive leaves to tremble in their wake. Above them, the branches creaked and snapped, creating a symphony of chaos. The wind howled like a wild beast, while the creatures shrieked in frenzy. They dove into the tangled mess of overgrown greenery below. As Andrea's heart raced, her gaze shot to the rear. One creature swooped down, its wings thrumming like a drum, fixated on Owen. Without hesitation, she launched herself at him, and they crashed to the ground, tumbling down the steep hillside. The thick undergrowth enveloped them, pulling them into its green embrace.

***

Andrea's eyelid fluttered open, revealing a foggy crimson mist. Her right eye strained to focus, clouded by a thick haze. A sharp pain shot through her ankle, while her shoulder throbbed relentlessly. She turned her head, wincing at the effort, and spotted Owen beside her. His still body lay motionless, a large gash on his back bleeding profusely. Blood oozed from the wound, forming a dark pool on the damp earth. As she took in the sight of Owen's lifeless form, dread rushed in like a tidal wave, threatening to drag her under into its chilling darkness.

She fell to her knees beside him, dust crunching beneath her. Gently, she rolled him onto his back. Her heart ached. His chest shuddered with short, shallow breaths, stark against the stillness. Andrea's left arm quaked from her recent ordeal as she clutched his shoulders. She shook him with all her strength. His eyelids, heavy as lead, slowly flickered open, revealing a glint of recognition. “Hey,” Owen whispered, a breathless murmur escaping his lips. Suddenly, his eyes shot wide. A blood-curdling scream erupted as his hand brushed the jagged gash on his forehead. The chilling sound sent shivers racing down Andrea's spine. Helplessness gripped her as she watched agony twist Owen’s face.

Andrea instinctively pressed her hand against the gash on her arm. Warm blood trickling through her fingers like a crimson stream. Her fingers closed around fading fragments of memories. The horrifying attack by the creatures flooded her mind, bringing Hayley's lifeless body to life. Her skin, once warm, was now cold and pale. Her bright eyes, once radiant, lay frozen in eternal stillness. Tears cascaded down Andrea's cheeks, carving painful channels through the grime on her face. Each tear felt like a tiny monument to her loss, a tribute to a friendship shattered. Hayley's desperate screams continued to echo in Andrea's ears, intertwining with her ragged breaths. The crushing weight of what had happened pressed on her, making it hard to breathe. Every muffled cry for help haunted her, a relentless reminder of the horror that had engulfed them.

A piercing screech sliced through the silence from above, announcing the arrival of one of the winged creatures. Their bat-like wings unfurled, casting a shadow that swallowed the surrounding trees whole. One of the creatures folded its wings and, like a bullet, plummeted towards them. Andrea quickly grasped Owen's arm, jerking him from his trance. She dragged him to his feet with all her strength, and together, they darted into a dense thicket. The branches and leaves enveloped them like a protective embrace. While the beast swooped overhead, its beak yawning wide in a futile attempt to seize their limbs. As they held their breath as another ear-splitting screech echoed around them. From the undergrowth sprang a second creature, equally fearsome. Its claws scraped menacingly against the earth. Its eyes were locked and unblinking, fixated on its intended prey.

Owen's gaze met Andrea's, panic pooling in his constricted pupils. He took in the sight of her battered feet, shoulder, and the jagged gash above her ear. A curse escaped his lips, shattering the stillness around them. The grim reality hit him – they wouldn't be able to run. In one swift motion, he pressed her to the ground, cradling her head in his arms to protect her from the ground. He raised himself, peering above the reeds and flowers. The creature's unblinking eyes snapped onto him, locking onto its new prey. With one last glance at Andrea, he began to flee, drawing the creature away from her. Andrea lay frozen, her mind a chaotic swirl of disbelief. It wasn't until she lifted her head, her eyes tracing Owen's movements, that she realised he was leading the creature away from her.

Owen's voice cut through the despair, a battle cry against the beast. Fury fuelled his aim as he hurled rocks and stones with wild abandon. Each throw increased his momentum, and a triumphant grin blossomed on his face when one struck true, piercing the creature's eye. The agonised shriek reverberated, echoing his wrath. Impatience clouded the creature's resolve, and its claws dug deep into the dirt, gaining speed. As it bore down on him, Owen snatched the machete he had wielded earlier. With a swift, decisive swing, the blade arced towards the creature's neck, and a bone-chilling shriek escaped from its maw. Undeterred, Owen struck again and again, each blow releasing a geyser of cobalt-hued blood. The blade sank deeper, and each impact weakened the creature's furious roars. At long last, silence filled the air; the fiend lay still, its head severed from its body—a grim testament to Owen's unyielding determination.

Owen let out a sigh as deep as the ocean, his tense muscles unwinding. A grateful grin spread across his face, though his legs trembled like jelly. As he hobbled towards Andrea, her gaze was fixed on him. Concern etched deep lines into her face as she saw his struggle. Then, in a heartbeat, everything changed. A snarling beast burst from the treeline, its jaws wide open like an open trap. With one swift, deadly strike, it attacked with ferocious precision. Bloodlust surged through its veins as it ripped Owen's head from his body. The creature took to the sky, a dark shadow against the clouds, vanishing into the trees. Owen's lifeless form slumped to the ground, the machete slipping from his grasp. Andrea's scream pierced the stillness, echoing through the forest like a mourning dove's cry.

Daniel expertly navigated the treacherous terrain. He dodged the erratic swoops of the winged creatures as the sun rose high overhead, scorching his weathered skin. With each determined step, the dry earth crunched beneath his boots, guiding him closer to the car. Suddenly, a blood-curdling scream pierced the air, sending a shiver down Daniel's spine and halting his progress. The shriek was as shocking as ice water, jolting him back to the harsh reality of his situation.

The scream pierced the stillness, a blood-curdling wail that gripped his core tightly. It wrapped around him, sending shivers down his spine and twisting his gut tight. The haunting sound still echoed vividly in his memory as a cruel reminder of what had happened just hours ago. A creature had viciously snatched Hayley away, leaving her lifeless form crumpled on the cold, unforgiving ground. Images played in his mind's eye, her desperate cry for help piercing the still air. The sound, once alive with desperation, was brutally cut short by the monster's merciless claws. Now, that scream echoed inside him, a chilling whisper of lurking terror, always waiting to strike again.

He'd seen his brother and Andrea tumble down the hill a little while earlier. Their cries for help carried through the air before suddenly stopping. But he didn't spare a second thought for them. His own fear had him in a chokehold, warping his mind and making him feel like a stranger in his own skin. He knew his brother could hold his own, and he had faith he would pull through. That was until he heard Andrea's terrified scream pierce the air. The sound made him pause, fearing his brother might have been overpowered. If fear didn't grip him so tightly, he could have gone back. But instead, he pushed forward, forcing his way through the dense thicket of trees that seemed to close in around him like a living entity.

And then, in a split second, disaster struck like a vulture. Just as another creature swooped down, its razor-sharp talons ready to strike, Daniel's grip faltered. He stumbled, his arms flailing wildly as he desperately tried to regain his balance. But it was too late. The creature seized its chance, its powerful beak closing around Daniel's right arm like a vice. The grip was unyielding, as if it had been waiting for the perfect moment to snap his arm in two. With a piercing screech, the beast soared into the sky, Daniel dangling below. The wind whipped through his hair, its biting gusts stinging his face. He screamed, a mix of fear and pain echoing through the air. Terrifying scenarios played in his mind, each one more gruesome than the last. Would the creature release him, sending him tumbling into the abyss? Or would his arm give way under the monstrous grip, the bone shattering like fragile glass?

With a firm grip on the machete in her one good hand, Andrea struck the earth. The heavy blade thudded with a primal beat, echoing her desperation. Above, dark silhouettes twisted and turned. They performed a menacing aerial dance, their presence suffocating. She was trapped, like prey, as they circled around her, ready to strike. The beast that had severed Owen's head loomed close, its jaws stained with his blood. On the brink of collapse, she clung to a fiery hope: was this a grotesque fantasy? A terrible dream, surely, from which she'd soon awaken? But the harsh truth was this nightmare was all too real. The smell of damp earth and blood hung heavy in the air. A morbid stench clung to her skin, refusing to let her escape the terror that had consumed her world.

One of the beasts, its eyes fixed on Andrea like a hawk on prey, plummeted towards her. Its beak stretched menacingly, ready to pierce her flesh. As it closed in, she raised her machete, summoning every last ounce of strength. With one fierce strike, she drove the blade deep into the creature's neck. The impact sent the beast spinning to the ground, thrashing and screeching in agony. The machete lodged deeper, a cruel shard of iron in its flesh. Andrea's face twisted with fury as she pushed down, her muscles trembling with effort. At last, the weapon wrenched free, severing the head from the body. Collapsing onto the blood-soaked earth, she gasped, her chest heaving with exhaustion. But tranquility was short-lived. Another creature, talons sharp as daggers, swooped down. It sank its claws deep into her shoulder, lifting her off the ground. Suspended in mid-air for a heart-stopping moment, she felt weightlessness before the brutal slam back down. The creature repeated its savage dance, hoisting her up, then dropping her, claws gouging into her flesh. Andrea howled, her vision flickering as she weakly swung the machete. Desperation fuelled her frantic strikes. Then came the third creature, its beak snapping like a closing trap around her right arm, trying to rip it from her. Teetering on the edge of darkness, Andrea summoned a final surge of strength. She plunged the machete into the creature's skull. It released its grip, crashing to the floor, eyes wide in death's embrace. Despite her severe injuries, Andrea remained defiant, her spirit untamed. Amidst the chaos, her machete clung tightly in her hand, a symbol of her indomitable will.

With one creature's talon slicing into her back, Andrea struggled to breathe. Summoning her last reserves of strength, she swung her blade up one final time. The sword sliced through the air, biting deep into the creature's feathered hide. It sank deep into its chest, drawing a gasp of surprise from it. The beast faltered, releasing her, and she fell to the ground with a heavy thud. As darkness began to close in, she heard a heavy thump nearby. Another creature had landed, its footsteps thundering like doom. Perhaps, she thought, it waited to deliver the final blow. Summoning her last ounce of will, she lifted her head. Horror pierced her chest as she locked eyes with a ghastly sight: the decaying head of her friend Daniel stared back, eyes vacant and lifeless. Beside him loomed another creature, its gaze fixed on her with chilling intensity. Andrea's lungs screamed for air, but her voice was trapped, choking in her throat. All that remained was her heartbeat, pounding wildly, as she awaited the winged beast to take her life.
