Surprise after Surprise

This project was challenging on so many levels.

First, because I dislike taping (love the pulling, just not the placing! ha!) I decided to make one large sheet for all 18 samplers, instead of three different sheets. Unfortunately, the only large sized paper I had was an old pad of mixed media paper, which proved entirely too thin for wet paint. The paper tore (as you can tell in the 2nd photo on top row of the sampler, and tore the paintings but I actually liked the texture of that, so I'm going to try something along those lines with some medium. Ha. The tape also tore the paper as I removed it, tearing into some of the paintings. Grr. Lessons learned.)

I chose 3 color palettes from Pinterest, with the 2nd being entirely out of my comfort zone (browns, tan, burgundy, purple), but surprise - two of those samplers ended up being my favorite to recreate as larger pieces. And green was not in any of the palettes, when that's usually my go-to color.

I learned that mark making improves the paintings immensely. I'm still not sure I'm in love with any of these, but out of the 18 samplers, I had 10 that I liked well enough to try to paint again.

Sticking with the compositions I chose proved challenging, and I was a little too literal with some of them (like the frame in frame I made larger.) I created a composition sheet instead of printing them out (thanks for that option though!!) because I wanted to put them to memory. I'm grateful for the experience - definitely learned a lot!! Thanks, Denise!
