Study in Bold colors, bold strokes
Update to my original post - the influences in my own painting style are impressionist, expressionist bold colors, bold strokes. Loose, confident strokes were my goal with this project.
- I really loved watching the two different creative personalities of Paul and Melissa create their own versions of this landscape.
- I chose to modify the composition to get practice using reference images with some creative license rather than just copying a photo as is.
- I also went with a vivid, bold color scheme rather than realism because I crave lots of color.
- I used cut pieces of clothing price tags as my “brush” because I am trying to find a way to not use brushes. Brushes seem to lose their shape and edge quickly and I spend more time cleaning them than I do painting. I can’t get small detail without brushes, but for a landscape the thick card stock tags worked. They also loosen me up. Also, thinking I am doing a “study” really takes the pressure off.
- My original intention was to do a “study” to see if the colors would work; then do a larger painting. After I completed this one, I was pleased and felt no desire to do another at a larger scale.
- I am wondering if I am needing a “story” to the images I am painting. I have only painted a few landscapes and I think this is my resistance to them.
Thank you for another great class!
