Hi Nika, thank you so much for taking the class and sharing this wonderful drawing! You have done an absolutely fantastic job of observing this reference - particular credit for doing such a brilliant job with those multiple ovals of the scale's face (if that's the right word?! You know the part I mean...!) - it is really tricky to pick apart those shapes, and then translate them into lovely fluid pencil shapes and you have done such a brilliant job! You have also got a really nice confident looking drawing here from the defined way you have completed your final line layer - such a fantastic job well done! The only *tiny* area I can really see for improvement is the shape of the rectangle like shape between the main part of the scales and the silver bowl part - looking at the negative space of that shape in the reference, I think it's a little taller and narrower than in your drawing - if you didn't already give it a go, checking the negative shapes around your object can help you identify any little proportional tweaks like that - but this is really quite minor in the whole scheme of such a great drawing. You should be really proud of this - great job, well done and thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you so much for your feedback! I see exactly what you’re saying - I’ll practice looking at the negative space. It’s a new concept I learned in your course, and I’m excited to apply it! Do you have any tips for drawing more organic shapes, like the daffodil in your reference materials?

Yes sure - organic shapes can seem overwhelming because they often have more detail within them, or the outlines can seem more complex - so first of all, don't panic! Try to visualise the most simplified version of the shape (for example a circle or oval) first, sketch it in, then break that down into smaller shapes (in this case the petals are quite like triangles) - so you would only really be thinking about applying the detail of that frilly line toward the end of the process of drawing it. Remember the way a sculptor might start by first making a block of stone roughly the right shape, then dividing it up further, then adding details last. Thank you for your advice - I just uploaded an attempt at the daffodil! My goal is to use my line drawings to make watercolor paintings, so I added some detail with pencil to show the veining in the petals, but I think I’ll erase them and add them in with paint later instead, maybe? I’m still trying to find my style. Let me know what you think!

Hi Nika, wow that is so great that you have tackled the daffodil too - great job! You have done a fantastic job of observing and drawing out all those shapes so brilliantly - It can feel like white a complex shape with all those differently shaped petals, so well done on doing such a super job! 
I feel as though the veining on the petals is slightly flattening your drawing though - particularly in the centre of the flower, as the direction of them is going quite abruptly toward the centre, rather than creating that deep, tube-like effect. I think its tricky to draw them in because they are very subtle, so its quite hard to really pin down exactly their direction, so actually perhaps taking this into watercolour will be a great way of representing that depth! My advice would be to use all those very careful observation techniques again to identify the shapes of the areas of dark, medium and lightest tone (it can help sometimes to turn your image black and white if you find the color gets a bit distracting). Working with tone and colour can be particularly challenging to ignore our brain's helpful suggestions because it likes to think it knows how shadows work ;) - so just be super aware when you work on that to keep looking at the reference, maybe turning it upside down etc to keep those observations from getting swayed by the brain's suggestions!
I love the way your drawing style is developing - there's a beautiful graphic quality to these drawings - strong bold lines and neat edges - so I'm so excited to see how it starts to develop with color too!
