Hi Andrew,  Thank you for sharing! You did great for your very first oil painting, in color no less!  Without know how you started, you already caught the alignment of the eyes.  The other thing I'll mention is that while some sort of solvent isn't necessary, sometimes it can be helpful in the early stages of the painting (Mainly, the initial block in) as the majority of paints directly out of the tube can be too thick when applied on their own with a brush in the beginning.  Each color/pigment, as well as just certain brands will flow differently when used directly, so this is where some sort of solvent or medium can help. It just makes it easier to dilute and control the paint.  The other thing I'll mention is that based off your image, its hard to get a sense of light/dark and if there was any dominant shadows? This could just be the case of perhaps having a more well lit piece of reference, but I won't comment on that too much since its your first painting.  Overall, this is a great first attempt, and they will get better! The hardest part about oil painting in the beginning is just getting a feel for how the paint moves and interacts with other paint of the surface. Its really tricky at first, but once you get used to it, its one of its best qualities.  I'd try doing another one of these exercises, maybe even just use white/black paint, or even white/burnt umber,etc to simplify the process down and remove the variable of color. Try and dilute the paint with a medium (linseed, stand oil,etc) for the initial block-in. You don't need to use too much, just enough to get the paint to flow easier. Great job!

First attempt at oil painting. The rightmost eye is too high and I did not use a solvent such as linseed oil or turpentine. It took me 5 hours at most.
