Palette knife impasto seascape

Palette knife impasto seascape - image 1 - student project

I'm interested in learning how to paint impasto style using palette knives, so this class was a good first step for me down that path. I've always liked the look of impasto paintings, so it feels good to begin learning how to make them!

I'm using acrylic paints which I find don't automatically work so well with a palette knife, they seem a little too runny, so I bought some Liquithick additive medium to thicken the paint. This seems to make the paint almost grainy and gritty, so I may be adding too much medium.

Painting this way feels more like frosting a cake than painting, but I really enjoy it. It's a much freer way of painting.

I'm still trying to work out blending, but that will just take more practice.
