I did not sketch out and about (have never tried that yet). I did however just played a bit with my mug collection and leftover palette. None are perfectly they just sat in front me on a table. Watercolor and pen. Neocolor crayon. Watercolor pencil. Also my worst one I tried negative painting and called it a day. I did include my mugs for comparison.
