Hey Mark, These are great. Thanks for sharing. Looks like you really took your time to hone the technique, so congrats. Only thing I noticed was that on the face, it may be a little hot. I can't completely tell, and stylistically you can do as you please, but it looks like you may have lost some detail on the cheek on the lit side and in the shirt. You could probably come down 1/3-2/3 stop. But like I said I can't completely tell. Either way, looks great! Looking forward to seeing the rest man. Best, Justin

Thanks Justin for the feedback. That's very helpful. You're correct, when I brought the image in post it showed that part of the image to be overexposed. This studio session really helped me to think about making a checklist in terms of things to check for in shoots before closing down. 

Follow up question, What are your top three things you check for when doing a studio shoot? (color balance, over/under exposure, etc)

Great second shot btw...is that your gf? Nice job hitting the Rembrandt light triangle.

In terms of my shoots, I'm a little rusty because it's second nature, but it sort of goes like this:

1) Lighting concept and set up - figuring out what you want and setting that up. Basically what you see in the video.

2) Exposure. You start with what's right; i.e. using a light meter to make sure everything is balanced. Then you can deviate. When you're good, you can just wing it but honestly the meter will save you heaps of time.

3) Check for warnings - highlight and shadow clipping. In a nut shell, are your shadows too dark that you can recover any detail? Are the highlights so bright you've lost the detail (i.e. blown out)? Some times you'll creatively clip one or the other, really depends on the shoot. 

4) Color balance - we shoot a color card or grey card before we begin shooting any lighting set up. If the light changes, we shoot one again. It gives us our foundation for correct color for post processing.

Of course, all these things we monitor throughout the shoot because if your subject moves, lighting changes, etc...all these things can change. So you just have to be a little vigilant.
