Hey y'all! 

With the live Netflix adaptation of Cowboy Bebop coming out today, I thought it'd be a great time to draw some fun copy art! I've been rewatching the original series (which is also on Netflix) and the animation, music, and vibes are so so inspiring. I highly recommend it if you haven't watched it before! 

At the very least, you should watch the opening title sequence—it's amazing!

 

 

CREDIT

For my project, I'm copying Spike Spiegel, the main character from the late 90's anime show Cowboy Bebop. This show and character were created by the director, Shinichirō Watanabe, and character designer, Toshihiro Kawamoto. You can see the reference image I used below.

 

HONOR + PLAY

Since I've been watching the show, I've been aching to draw Spike and finally sat down to do it this morning. I decided to go with my personal favorite copying intention of Honor and Play. I found an image from the show (on the left below) that I liked a Spike, and then drew my version of Spike in my own style!

I tried to push myself a little with the body proportions because Spike's lanky long legs are so distinctive, and I wanted to have a bit of that in my version too, even though usually my drawings have relatively short bodies (like me!) But when it came to medium, hair, eyes, colors, and overall construction, I stuck to my own way of drawing!

I always love seeing the side-by-side of the original and my copy. It help me be able to recognize my own style choices and why I like them—sometimes it's hard to see those things and easy to forget them! 

I've been feeling a little creatively blocked lately and have been playing with different ways of motivating myself to draw. This Honor + Play way of copying another work of art is one of my absolute favorites and it totally worked for me this morning! I had fun, am happy with what I made, and am already excited to draw more! CREATIVE BLOCK BLASTED!
