Mountains at sunset

Mountains at sunset - student project

I really enjoyed working on this painting. I feel like I was able to apply skills I’ve learned in several of Rachael’s classes, including painting sunsets, effectively using the fat over lean principle (which I’ve had a hard time understanding how to apply when using a palette knife, not a brush, until this painting), composition format, painting with a limited palette, and trying to create atmospheric perspective by color temperature and hue. It’s hard to get a picture that captures the color and knife strokes.

The pictures I have in my mind to paint are still far above my ability to use either a brush or palette knife, but this is a painting I feel satisfaction at when I look at it.
