Thank you Justin. As far as monolight set ups, I think its just all trail and error. But in these shots I was using soft boxes rather than the beauty dish. 

What would you recommend best? I have yet to use a beauty dish and would like to know which gives a better output for studio and possibly outside work.

Hey Tony - it's all subjective here. You can use the softbox or beauty dish in or outside.  First thing you want to think about is whether you want soft or hard light. The beauty dish depending on whether its white or silver will have different characteristics of medium to hard light. And typically, I would use the beauty dish for something that wasn't a portrait shot. You can use it for full body but you'll probably need another light for fill.

Depending on the softbox size, and how many diffusion layers are in it...it will yield a variety of softness. You can actually remove all the diffusion if you want it to be harder.

As for output, depends on the power of your monolight. For instance, Profoto makes a D1 Air monolight which comes in 250, 500, and 1000ws power outputs. As a rule of thumb, if you mean better output as in yielding more power, you're going to get a lot more light output from that beauty dish with all things being held constant.  You'll get higher light output from the beauty dish but faster light fall off too.

The light being fired out of a softbox will very based on the thickness and amount of the diffusion.

Also when you're using light outside, you want to blend it with natural light but that's entirely different question.

I would suggest going to the studio with both modifiers. Crank the power on the monolight all the way up and measure the output with a light meter. Try it at max power with the beauty dish and then again with a beauty dish and beauty dish sock. Then take it off and do it with the softbox with inner baffle and outer baffle and then remove each one after the other to see what different outputs you can achieve at max power.

That'll give you an idea of the most output you can achieve. It'll also help you determine whether you'll have enough output to "overpower" the sun. Hope that helps.
