Learning Butterflies

The class is excellent and I plan to go through portions of it again and again! This will sound odd but I have actually NEVER had my face painted other than by me. I have been painting for a long time and have painted many realistic and fantasy butterflies on project surfaces. But for some reason as soon as I load up with face paint, I feel like a 100% novice! So I am embarrassed by the following - but 2020 is THE year for me to really knuckle down and get both skilled and confident as a face painter.

I work mainly on the heads for practice but I am going to be using the plastic mats more going forward. The heads get discolored so fast - no matter what you spray them with - LOL - and I can clean and keep going faster on the plastic mats.

This one was one of the first painted. Lines are heavy and there is NO movement to this butterfly - which I think is really important. This thing is MASSIVE and it would be a really weird person to have this much forehead available - LOL!

This one was just super simple and my goal here was to make things more compact. I tend to get way oversized and that just emphasizes what I don't do well. Again, the lines - especially the teardrops - are heavy. To me, at least in my limited thinking, butterfly lines should be light and airy - like the creature.

A little better but the blue is way too thin. That was a paint I don't normally use and one I'll toss.

Following are some smaller butterflies. The line work is not great but I do like how the yellow one below at least feels like the butterflies are "light".Learning Butterflies - image 4 - student projectLearning Butterflies - image 5 - student projectLearning Butterflies - image 6 - student project

I know I have a LOT to learn - which is what makes this a fun art form.

I haven't posted a photo of a favorite butterfly artist but two of the artists I watch often are Ariel Minerva and Ashlea Hinson.

Again, thank you for the class, Laura!
