Lavender fields & the majestic Mt. Hood

Lavender fields & the majestic Mt. Hood - student project

Update Jun 19 2024- Thank you so much Chris for reviewing my Mt. Hood Lavender Field painting and for the honest feedback and especially for taking the time to create the video for me on what I could try to enhance my painting.  I followed your advice and wow...it really did help.  I will look forward for if you get a chance to do another class on painting lavender.  As always your classes are so thorough and have played such a huge part in my watercolor journey.  I just can't say "thank you" enough.  I left the original posted here as well for reference. I just got a new scanner, the Epson V600, so the quality of the image is better as well. Happy Day!  Diana

This was a great tutorial Chris.  I was excited when I saw you put out a class on painting lavender, as I had a photo in my collection of Mt. Hood and the lavender fields in front. I love old cabins, houses and barns so I was happy to paint this one, but I hadn't attempted it yet, as I wasn't sure how to paint the lavender, but thought I would give it a try. Your guidance was just what I needed, but in hindsight, I wish I would have stuck with your tutorial instead of painting my own, I think I would have gotten a better grasp on the lavender.  Some parts of my painting I like and other parts not so much.  I didn't get the contrasts and masking fluid right for the lavender fields and wasn't happy with the end results.  Distant mountains should be lighter, but in this photo, and many others of the same shot, the old cabin is literally sitting at the base of the mountain so to speak.  It's kind of central to the painting so that's how I saw it.   Still a learning curve for me to envision what I want to convey in my head instead of relying on a photo.  I also didn't get the bent tree in the painting and that bend is in every photo you can find of Mt. Hood from this angle!  Oh well....Next time maybe.

Anything you can suggest for tweaking & helping my lavender fields would be much appreciated.  I mainly used the same paints as you and painted on Arches 100% cold press watercolor paper.

Thanks Chris for all your helpful tips and always putting out quality videos.
