I'm a Hip-Hop producer, song writer and an engineer out of necessity. I record my music in a bedroom studio that's a box. I only use my monitors for reference when I want to bang my music loud, never to mix. I mix with my Sennheiser HD 380 pro headphones that are really flat with decent bass response. For me the key to a good mix is sound selection. I've never been one to believe you can fix a flawd recording with mixing and mastering. I also use reference material to compare my mixes too, like Dr Dre's Chronic 2001 which is still well mixed project even by todays standards, just not as loud. My signal chain for recording vocal is pretty simple. I have an AT4040 mic with a Voxgaurd shield connected to a Apogee Duet 2 interface. I use a number of Waves plugin bundles like Gold and One Knob along with Slatedigital. I also use iZotope's Ozone 5 for mastering. I like to keep things simple.
