Gypsy Journal with Lucie Duclos

Dad is 89 and struggles with artistic projects, but this well defined project was the right mix of structure and ‘don’t worry about it’. This is going to be given as a present and we are both really happy with the final result. We did make a few changes:

1. Dad absolutely refused to use a book no matter how damaged - so we ended up using magazines, and I found some content online and created a giant PDF of that and some of my photos and patterns. I printed it and had Dad select content from those sources. We then aged and dyed some of those pages, we also crumpled some so the paper would have varied texture.

2. We altered the pages before stitching them into the journal to make it a bit easier on Dad. This also let us modify more pages while other pages were drying. If anyone else does this - make sure to refrain from trimming until after everything is altered and you decide on the order of the pages.

3. Instead of book binding material, we used book binding tape - which is essentially fabric tape that’s 2” wide.

I did have one problem, when I glued the images down for the cover collage, after it dried the cover would not stay closed. It seems like some of the paper was too tight, and were acting like tendons to keep the cover open. I ended up slicing the tight pieces and adding a piece of washi tape to cover the cover surgery.  However, I’m not sure why this happened, or how to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Gypsy Journal with Lucie Duclos - image 3 - student project
