Gouache florals

This is a fun class. I chose these three flowers (lavender, thistle, and apple blossom), but since I didn’t have them live, I used photos. I’m new to watercolor and just started using gouache. I only have a tube of white, so I’ve just been mixing it in with my watercolors. The results are inconsistent, but I’m learning how it works.

I’ve included my sketches of the flowers. You can see I adapted them some in the final painting. I think the thistle turned out the best, but I’m a little disappointed in the apple blossoms particularly the color. I’ve never painted white flowers. I tried mixing the white gouache with Opera Rose, but couldn’t get it light enough (color mixing is tricky!). Looking back, I suppose I should’ve used the white of the paper and just added the Opera Rose for highlights and texture. Something to try next time!  Thank you!Gouache florals - image 1 - student project
