Figure Drawing Basics

Love it, but I have to agree with Mark Hill (Teacher)

Clara this is a wonderful figure drawing if you haven't done a lot in the past. Everything looks fairly proportional although the only thing that maybe jumps out is the feet maybe being a little small. Otherwise this is a great practice sketch, and I would encourage you to do more! If you can, post them up and I'd be happy to leave a critique.

This second project that I just did was a bit tricky because the pic I was going off of, the figure had both pants and rubber boots on.  So, I know the legs and feet are not right.   Do you have any suggestions for good reference photos or sketches like the ones you use?

All things considered, I feel like the second drawing is a success. The proportions look better than your first drawing and the lines look more confident! Given the fact that you had to edit the reference to construct the figure this is a good study. 

As far as reference goes, I would look for Pose File books on Amazon, or anything under the search 'figure drawing reference for artists'. Theres definitely a few decent nude reference books to practice from. The key thing to look for is that the figures are well lit with nice light and shadows which will make studying them a bit easier. You can look for reference online, but its better to find a book or two so you can place it next to your sketchbook or drawing pad and study that way. Keep up the good work!

Clara these last few studies are great! Its nice to see the construction lines in there and I feel like your line work is getting better. My only critique on the last two is that maybe the legs are getting just a little bit stretched out on both of them compared to the rest of the torso. Otherwise I thinking you're making some good progress here. 

To maybe help with the legs, I usually like to measure a distance from the top of were the pelvis ridge (iliac crest) down to the knee, and then from the knee down to the bottom of the foot. I'll compare those measurements with something on the torso if possible, like the pit of the neck down to the crotch or anything else I can use as a landmark. I'll check those measurements a few times before I fully flush of the leg and block in more information. Great work though keep it up!
