Example Class Project

Hello everyone! Here’s my project example for this class.

In each exercise, I’ve shared where I sketched the mug and which concepts I focused on—like light and shadow, negative space, and even painting from memory or imagination.

This class came from a very personal place: my journey of falling back in love with sketching. If you’re curious to read a bit about how that happened, I’ve included a link to a short story at the end of this project post.

I hope it inspires you to start—or return to—your own sketchbook practice!

MY PROJECT!

1. Watercolor + Pencil – Light & Shadow (Hyde Park)

A classic combo to explore volume and contrast. This one was painted on-site in Hyde Park, and I focused on observing how light falls on simple shapes. Great for loosening up and sharpening your eye for tonal values.

2. Watercolor + Brush Markers – Painting from Memory (Brixton Market)

Here, I sketched from memory—after walking through the market, I sat down and painted what stayed with me. It’s a great exercise to strengthen visual memory and let go of perfectionism. Also super freeing!

3. Watercolor + Colour Pencils – Negative Space (Mallorca)

Painted at a friend’s house in Soller. In this one, I focused on sketching the space around the object first. Negative space is such a useful concept to shift your perspective and improve proportions when drawing from life.

4. Watercolor + Markers – Working from a Photo (Palma de Mallorca)

I took a photo of the scene while out and painted it later at a friend’s home. Sketching from photos lets you slow down and make more deliberate choices—ideal when you're not able to draw on-site.

5. Watercolor + Wax Crayons – From Imagination (Barcelona Studio)

A playful close-up painted from imagination. Wax resist creates beautiful textures and surprises. This is perfect for breaking routine, letting go of control, and just having fun with colour and shapes.

Why I created this class?  --> The sketchbook I almost ignored… and the class it inspired

THIS CLASS WAS FILMED ON THE MOVE!

Example Class Project - image 7 - student project

This class is close to my heart because I challenged myself to film it whilst I was travelling.

I usually sketch when I’m on the go—at cafés, on trains, waiting for buses or catching up with friends—so I decided to film this class entirely on the move. It was a bit nerve-racking at first (especially in Hyde Park, where people were watching me ), but also felt very true to how I actually work.

I also tend to move frequently due to work, and my family lives in different places. So being able to film a class on the go -with no excuses- was a great win for me!

I can't wait to see your projects come to life!!!!

With love,
Silvi
