Deum Verum

Deum Verum - student project

Of the pieces that were listened to over this course I most preferred Deum Verum. The relative simplicity of what they're doing musically results in a rather "pure" sound. There are not a lot of runs or embellishments and so the synchronicity of the performers has to be very good.

The Gregorian chants have a very old world feel to them - for obvious reasons - while also feeling timeless. Because of this it transports listeners and connects the two times to each other.

What I enjoy most is the sense of community a chant creates, both literally and emotionally. Much like singing an Alma mater or anthem, the group acapella element brings people together in a beautiful way. Using many voices to lift up a song or message to levels a single voice never could.
