Daisy the Bunny in Soft Pastels

Daisy the Bunny in Soft Pastels - student project

Hey Heather, I was so happy to see this class drop the other day! Last spring, a little bunny rabbit appeared in our yard and decided to make it her home. I named her Daisy because I first spotted her behind a group of daisies. She visited almost every day and kept me entertained with her adorable little face. Sadly, we found her in our yard the other day, likely the victim of a coyote or an owl. Although she was primarily grey, I wanted to honor Daisy with this painting.

As always, I had a great time creating art with pastels. I find that I don’t focus on the details as much when using pastels compared to other mediums. I loved creating the fun, faded background. I had bought some pan pastels, so this was my first time using them, along with my growing supply of soft pastels. I really enjoyed the experience!

We discussed the use of invisible gloves and nitrile gloves. I tried the invisible gloves, but my skin still broke out, so I decided to try some extra-small nitrile gloves. Although they take a bit of time to put on to achieve a snug fit, they work perfectly. I have full use of my fingers, and there’s no excess rubber at the tips to interfere. When I need clean hands for a short period, I simply wear a pair of regular latex gloves over the nitrile ones. I don’t need to take off or replace the fitted gloves. They actually work great!

I'm glad you shared your snowy day with us! You live about 90 miles from my mom in Burlington, WA, and they've had snow all week. We are expecting a cold front on Thursday, but it will likely bring freezing rain mixed with snow. UGH... thankfully, it's not expected to last long, and sometimes they get the forecast wrong!
