Gouache for Illustrators - Create a cute Animal Portrait

Hi Joseph, I was blown away by the idea of using the same techniques for digital painting and yes, it makes so much sense to do that too if you don't have the materials or prefer digital painting. Single-layer PS paintings can use the same principles as gouache does. The only thing is that you can't use the erase tool in gouache ;P Love your creativity of re-interpreting the assignment. I think you captured the essence of cuteness really well in your illustration. The style is quite sketchy, which I like. However, if you want to refine it more, please do so :) If you have any questions or would like feedback on a specific aspect, please let me know. Since you mention digital erasing, I have a question. I actually don't do that much painting but when I do I try to correct errors by painting opaquely over what I want to adjust. If I overshoot an internal shape edge I paint back in again on it from the outside and it seems fresher and less worried about perfection. Is gouache opaque enough to do that? I know it's related to watercolor but it seems to have much more covering power.

Thank you, Joseph. To your question about the opacity of gouache. If used right out of the tube or with very little water it can be completely opaque and give you a very good coverage. However, it does depend on the brand and also on the colour. If you buy gouache colours they come with an opacity code (little square, that is either full, or half full etc). The instructions of the manufacturer will say how much coverage each colour gives. Hope this helps :)

I painted it in Photoshop.I don't have a lot of experience with cute animal painting so I sort of based it on a toy hedgehog I found on this page:
