Barry Island

I live in the town of Barry, South Wales, UK which has a seaside resort called Barry Island. There is a wide sandy beach, a funfair and brightly coloured beach huts. I wanted to create a design which reflected these.

There isn't much art deco architecture to be found nearby so I resorted to online resources. I really liked this sunburst effect.Barry Island - image 1 - student projectAnd the pattern on this gate.

This was my initial drawing. I thought that the bottom part sort of resembled a sunrise and also the lights on a fairground ride.

The scallops at the top reflect the shells on the beach and the fan shapes on the side the beach huts.

I played around with a few different colour palettes (for waaaaaayyy longer than I should have) and made a few adjustments to the final design.

These are probably my top three favourite colour palettes.

This was based on a poster I found on Pinterest.

The second was a more metallic version, based on a wallpaper I found on Pinterest.

And finally, my favourite which was based on an advert for a locally distilled pink gin.

I'm still not 100% happy with the finished product. I did it all in Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo so can't apply the same textures, so will have to look for a workaround for that one. I'm also not sure if it would be better if my linework was a bit thinner. But these are all things that I can play around with in future designs.

I REALLY enjoyed this class and am now obsessed with collecting Art Deco patterns. I'm even pausing TV programmes and taking shots of the screen when I spot an interesting window or door design.

Thank you for a very interesting and inspiring class.
