Amour - Art Deco lettering
I am a admirer of Nick Misani's work (that I follow on social media) so needless to say that as soon as I saw he was teaching a class on Skillshare, I immediately saved it.
Thank you Nick for sharing your passion !
I really enjoyed watching your process and the sheets you made to guide us were very helpuful.
I grew up in Paris and always loved the Art Deco style. I no longer live there so for the reference images, I looked on the Internet and Pinterest to find some motifs:
- the palm tree/gingko leaf pattern that I like a lot. I was inspired by a contemporary, geometric and simplified interpretation of this iconic pattern (5th image - motif on doors).
- the geometric shapes and lines found on vintage dresses and Art Deco stained glasses
The hardest part was unsurprisingly the lettering practice.
On Illustrator, I used mainly geometric shapes to build the letters and the pathfinder tool. The easiest way to have a consistent weight for the letter was to use the same outline for each letter.
The color palette is based on this beautiful Art Deco inspired bathroom décor. I simply love the predominance of this dark green and the small touches of gold.
This is the flat version of my postcard made on Illustrator
Flat colored version
With some texture and the magical “dissolve mode” that I knew but never used before (didn't know how)!
Then I decided to have some fun with the color palettes:
- Turquoise version that I really like
- Joyful color palette inspired by a fabric
- A red version because AMOUR = LOVE in English
- With the colors from the French flag
My main concern is: does it look Art Deco-ey enough?
Any suggestions and tips to improve my work will be greatly appreciated!
