"A First" — let me count the ways. ..

  • first monochromatic watercolor painting
  • first attempt painting a vase
  • first attempt at adding stems in a vase
  • first painting of anything on a surface trying to use shadows.

Yes, I have worked with watercolors for over 5 years, but have become lazy about trying to paint anything "real."

Flaws here? Sure 'nuff! But I feel proud that I screwed up my courage to try this! The lesson was helpful. I watched, watched again, sketched the vase, started to paint, stopped the lesson, painted again, and kept going on like that. Brave rnow, thanks to Brenda and studfents who shared work!

I used a Daniel Smith Imperial Purple which granulates prettily. Tested out a bunch of swatches to check water to paint ratios. and was surprised by how the paint flowed and looked sort of impressionistic. Just went with that. I might have darkened the leaves and added more, and still might. But this was a great experience, and I felt peaceful working and managed to set aside my own harsh judgment.

Ready for more!
