Judy, I absolutely love this entire post and the honesty behind it.First of all, this painting is beautiful. The softness of the lavender, the glow in the glass vase, and the delicate stems inside the water all came together wonderfully. And honestly, the granulation from the Imperial Purple gives this such a natural organic texture. It feels calm and thoughtful instead of overworked.But even more than the final painting, I love what you said about setting aside your own harsh judgment and allowing yourself to try something new. That is such an important part of watercolor growth, and I think so many students will relate to your words here.And Judy… this looks like someone rediscovering confidence.I also love that you let yourself pause, rewatch, test swatches, repaint sections, and experiment instead of expecting perfection on the first try. That is exactly how artists grow.Honestly, this is the kind of project that makes me so happy to teach these classes. Beautiful work, beautiful reflection, and I’m very glad you’re ready for more. 💜 Give the other 2 monochromatic classes a try. They build on techniques but also allow for repetition of skills that will help you. And thank you again for taking the time to leave such thoughtful feedback and share your experience here. Brenda, I actually teared up reading this. I don’t cry. Wish I could. Tears are good. When I got to the part about “confidence,” I felt like you were reading my heart AND my project. Every dear word you said was insightful and uplifting. I’ve been learning to be eclectic with media - true - but when I did this project, I realized how I missed my old friends, watercolors. I am a retired writing teacher who’s written since about age 12. I taught high school but mostly higher ed rhetoric and writing and literature. Words mean a great deal to me, and your words touched me deeply. Thank-you. Best, Judy  BTW, Before I even read your suggestion to sign up for the other classes, I had already done so!

There is something very different about a painting created by someone who is allowing themselves to experiment, observe, and trust the process instead of trying to force perfection. That shift shows up in the work, and I really believe it showed up here.

Yes, I have worked with watercolors for over 5 years, but have become lazy about trying to paint anything "real."
Flaws here? Sure 'nuff! But I feel proud that I screwed up my courage to try this! The lesson was helpful. I watched, watched again, sketched the vase, started to paint, stopped the lesson, painted again, and kept going on like that. Brave rnow, thanks to Brenda and studfents who shared work!
I used a Daniel Smith Imperial Purple which granulates prettily. Tested out a bunch of swatches to check water to paint ratios. and was surprised by how the paint flowed and looked sort of impressionistic. Just went with that. I might have darkened the leaves and added more, and still might. But this was a great experience, and I felt peaceful working and managed to set aside my own harsh judgment.
