3 Approaches to Measuring + Proportion

Project 1: Drawing From a Reference Photo Using a Grid

I really enjoyed drawing using the grid technique - if feels fun and almost like a game, transferring the image across. Although it can initially feel like more work to work out the grids and draw them out, once I had those on paper, I was surprised by how quickly I drew this. It certainly would have taken me longer to draw it without the grid as I would have been doing way more correcting as I went along.

Project 2: Drawing From a Single object Using a Viewfinder

The most challenging part of this drawing was getting the right set-up, and it took me quite a while to get myself, my object, and my viewfinder in the right positions.

Once I had done that, I was again really surprised by how quickly I was able to draw this plant, and I'm really happy with the end drawing.

Trying not to move too much during the process of drawing it was certainly a challenge, but actually forcing myself to draw pretty quickly worked really well, and I was able to relocate my eye line when I did move, and actually found this was a great warm-up when I came to using the sighting techniques in Project 3.

Project 3: Drawing From a Still life Using Sighting Techniques

This was definitely the most challenging of the drawings, and took me the longest to complete. As you saw in the class, I initially got the proportions of the boot quite drastically wrong!

Even though I corrected that, I know there are still a couple of things not quite right in my drawing - the shape of the bottom part of the boot isn't quite right - it needs to be a little more 'bent'. I made the paintbrush pot larger, but I still think it could do with being a little bigger still, and the angle of the 2 smallest paintbrushes isn't quite right, and the plant is a little on the big side.

In saying this though, I am happy with what I've ended up with. I found using the sighting techniques gave me a structure, and the tools to produce a drawing which I know is much more in proportion than I would have achieved by just relying on drawing without measuring.
