I started planning my composition with a sketch:
When I was confident with my sketch, I started inking. I focus on texture when I ink, making sure my lines are representational of the materials of the world I'm designing:
Here's a mockup of my four distinct tonal planes. This is how I plan the light in my illustration:
Lastly, I color. I pick my color palette to be emotive. I wanted the purplish hues of a resolving sunset but also to represent the dry warm air of a desert night. The emotive vibe is "tranquility."
