Doodled Day at the Gardens
I've had Samantha's Draw Your Day book sitting on my Amazon wishlist for weeks, and finally made the purchase when I realized I was taking her class on Skillshare! The book is FILLED with her lovely work and totally inspired me to draw my own day.
The Inspiration
I chose to draw my day at the beautiful Descanso Gardens just north of Los Angeles. My favorite spot in the garden was probably this little exposed-frame hut with chairs facing the mountains. It was such a nice place to sit and rest your feet for a bit.
Many of the floral gardens were barren since we're in the middle of winter, but I saw a lot of these cute "fried egg flowers" all over the place!
The Supplies
I was trying out a few new supplies for this project, so I wanted to share my thoughts on them.
- Midori MD Cotton Notebook in A5 Blank - The Japanese-made paper is absorbent enough to hold watercolor paint. It's a little more creamy than I'd like, but I'm excited to use this as my new sketchbook!
- Sakura Micron 005 and 01 - My fineliner pens of choice. I prefer the 005 over the 01, but I hate how delicate the tip is.
- Winsor & Newton Cotman + Sakura Koi Watercolor Paints - I mixed my 2 student-grade watercolors to make my custom palette and it's been so well-loved. They're not the BEST paint (some of them are chalky), but they're good for my basic painting needs.
- Prince Round Brush Size 4 - I'm not picky with my watercolor brushes--I have this one because it was part of a value pack and it does its job!
- Pentel Arts Hybrid Technica 05 - I used this gel pen to do the writing at the bottom of the page, and I didn't like it. It skipped a lot on this paper and made it look messy. :/
The Project
I chose the Hero Image layout for this day, but would love to experiment with the other two in the future! I'll add them to this project when I do :)
Thanks for the awesome class, Samantha! I'm excited to read the rest of your book and add more art to my daily journaling sessions!
