Como criar padrões geométricos

Hi Peter, I created the above pattern but could not save it under 'Swatch', Illustrator will only let me save it under 'Symbol', could you explain please, also, as it is a symbol, how do I get rid of the blue box, tried 'expand' did not work. Many thanks A great class! Sade
