Chattanooga Church Scene
I was downtown in Chattanooga and saw this very interesting church column with mountains in the distance, so I took a photo and decided to sketch it for my project. I am using Derwent and Castle watercolor pencils. I first tried coloring the sky with dry Derwent blue watercolor pencils and activating them with water, but the lines didn't go away. I watched some tutorials on those specific pencils and tried other techniques from this course. I tried varying my pressure and using more water, but I couldn't get the pigment to dissolve. The only thing that worked for me was dipping my pencil directly in water and then applying color, or using the brush to transfer color from the pencil tip. I finished the piece by covering the original sky with a darker, brighter blue, then applied the rest of the color by dipping my pencil in water and painting it onto the sketch. If anyone has other suggestions, please let me know. In the second picture, I did a simple wash of the sky and used the pencil dipped in water

to apply the rest of the color. The first one was drawn freehand, and the second was a trace.
