Sketching People with Personality - Fun with Watercolor Figures for Urban Sketching

Jen, this is fantastic; I adore your creativity! My favorites are definitely the hockey players and the photographer. The guy on the bicycle is quite daring! It's such a pleasure looking at your work. As usual, you truly go the extra mile.

Thanks so much, Naidu -- I was getting frustrated but I'm too stubborn to give up ... hence the horde, lol! Tamas was kind enough to give me some great advice and that helped a lot. The hockey players are painted with coffee and my sketchbook smells *amazing* now. You're always so encouraging -- thank you :)

Wow Jen These all fabulous and so very interesting. definitely a Horde. your lettering also adds so much. 🤩😍

Thanks Jennifer! I was worried that they wouldn't be interesting enough. Phew! And Tamas gave me some great advice too.

Great horde, Jen~! They may be little, but they are definitely expressive. Not to mention nicely color-coordinated. How fun to be dazzled by simply looking at such a lively project!

Thanks Judy! Like I told Jennifer, I was afraid they would be boring. I'm getting better at thinking of gestures, but still struggle with proportions. Namely, making all the legs too short ... which is kind of funny in a dark sort of way! But, Tamas gave me some great feedback and that helped a lot. Hope you are doing well --

Jen, you just gave words to something I am struggling with such as "thinking of gestures." I tried a class yesterday that required some abstraction and breaking poses into basic shapes then exaggerating aspects. Not good at the latter either, but both seem to ask us to strengthen two opposite dimensions.--> The reality of basic shapes for abstraction with exaggeration.n Or, to SEE better what's there while thinking up/imagining something not visually apparent. That's all a stretch for me!

And here you come, Jen... with the "horde"... haha 🙂 I love how you keep pushing a subject, and the creativity you add to the class material. I definitely see the progress here. Your figures are truly expressive. I also like that you tell stories. And I can't stress enough that your lettering looks awesome. Your silhouette paintings looks fabulous. I like those athletes a lot. It really connects to the topic. Actually, I have a class in the pipeline related to this. It can really sparkle everyone's creative brain cells. Your carpenter's shadow interpretation... it's just wow. 🙂 And YES, the rider turned out extremely well. You nailed it. I like that one a lot. Thank you for the feedback. I'm really glad that my classes help you, and you find them "professional quality". It's a great compliment from someone who is so active in art like you.

You're very welcome, Tamas -- your classes have guided me from stick figures to expressive characters! I get stuck sometimes, but it's less intimidating overall. I really appreciate your suggestions with this project too ... adjusting the brush size made everything fall into place, like something "clicked" in my brain. Today I practiced some more, sketching the cast of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Lots of interesting poses there!

Yeah, the brush size makes a difference. I've updated the class with this info. I'm glad it's less intimidating by now, Jen.

I'm working hard on making expressive sketches, not just tidy little figures. Hopefully there's some progress? My favorite is the bicycle rider.
