Coffee Painting Skills, Create A Steaming Cup Of Coffee Using  Coffeepaint And Watercolor Techniques

Dear Maria, thank you for sharing your project! I definitely like your idea of combining graphite and blue. I also like how you preserved the whites and used the dark blue — it instantly creates contrast and gives the painting a sunny appearance. I understand your struggle with the steam. If you are in the grocery store, consider picking up some instant coffee for painting. Coffee is really beautiful to paint with and a wonderful way to explore watercolor. It behaves slightly differently and is perfect for painting on dry paper — you can easily erase the coffee to reveal the steam. With watercolor, especially blue, it is not always so easy to manage on dry paper. For this particular painting with the steam, I would recommend painting on wet or damp paper. On damp paper, you can easily adjust and lift the watercolor, creating the shape you want. I am working right now on a short class exercise that will explain how this shaping on wet paper works in watercolor. You did a great job with the uneven, soft steam — I can really feel it rising from the cup. Didn't have instant coffee but wanted to practice this in a monochrome color. I chose blue and used a little graphite pencil here and there. Steam was a struggle
