Caged
So I actually took this class because I'm writing a book and one of my characters writes poetry, so I wanted to further develop my poetry skills in order to write for him. Here's a poem I created for the character, called Caged.
Caged
Bones rattling against the bars
The air moves slow around my scars
A phantom caress
Shattering my skin
Teasing a life that won’t begin.
Then lo, a voice comes through the dark
It sings as sweetly as a lark
Of sunbeams burning
Through my chains
As if its light could end my pain.
If want could mend the break in me
Then lark’s sweet song might set me free
But wanting leads to wanting more
Than I’ve ever known before.
And so I wrap my shadows tight
To suffocate each hint of light
I burn the want ‘fore it can start
And lock the cage around my heart.
But hope had got its claws in me
And risking all calamity
I train my eyes upon the sun
And trembling, slide sweet lark the key.
