Wow, your second artwork is wonderful, Jen! I love the use of text around your border, the subtle marks and imagery, layers, and abstracted imagery. Would you mind if I shared this one too?

Yes, you can definitely share it :) The technique you showed us makes the picture almost gleam in person. I love that.  I'm not sure if it's still on display, but do you remember the giant Salvador Dali painting of the Last Supper at the National Gallery in DC? I was thinking about the white dove in Jesus's hand when I did this. I'm not a religious person, but it felt appropriate for all these lost souls ...

So well done Jen. There is so much emotion in this painting.🥺What a sad story. The colours add so much to the emotion…purples and blue an orange.. split complementary.

Jen, as a Mother-Goddess fan, I adore this. There is so much unity of color throughout the piece, and I always feel grateful to see your work on issues which seems to come from a depth of heart. Knowledge about events like this can be painful to carry, and now there is so very much to carry. (Did you read about the sacred site with a 16-foot statue of Jesus that was closed off by the border wall in NM?)  -Judy

Yikes ... I didn't know about the statue. That's heartless.  Very glad you like the piece. We stumbled across Ludlow by accident and I was *furious* that we weren't taught about it. And John D Rockefeller was at the head of it -- ai Yai Yai!  By the way, my family is Polish so I looked into their earlier faiths; early Slavs had "Mat Zemlya" (or varied spellings), literally "damp Mother Earth". People would dig a small hole, make confessions or pray to the mother goddess, then refill the hole. I like that thought.

I read a mind-blowing book by a Polish writer who won A Nobel in literature for it, The Books of Jacob. Very intense and shows major religious groups in Polad, and Istanbul, also living in both bluster and accord. I actually listened to a well-read audio-book (big fan of these). Writer’s name is Olga Tokarczuk. No idea how to say her last name. Lots of Polish life, culture and history. Good comment on John D.Rock. I too like the confession practice you shared. 

She's part Madonna and Child, specifically a Black Madonna. There's word play in that one of the Virgin Mary's names is "Our Lady of Sorrows". The woman in the picture is the wife of a miner who died in the Ludlow Massacre, holding her child who also died.

What a wonderful tribute, Jen to this awful tragedy as well as a way to reflect further upon your visit to this site. Thank you so much for sharing your artwork and its inspiration. I'm so glad you enjoyed the piece -- yes, you can share it on Instagram :) I was stunned to learn about Ludlow ... we wouldn't have known if we hadn't stumbled across the site.  And that's the tragic part.

Such atrocity! I held hope for a brief time that we were really moving forward as human being with brains, hearts, souls, kindness, etc. The ways things are now… this is not the world I grew up in. I grieve for atrocities of the past and where demented incompetence and wealth-worship appears to want us to go now. Never thought I’d ever utter this, but: “I want it put back the way it was before.” (That implies a very specific kind of “before,” I guess.) BTW, your piece could be printed on Bridge-Building Cards. They have Black Madonna cards and a ton of new interpretations of saints both contemporary and ancient. I think . I’ll see if I have an address for them online.Judy
