Windows and Walls

Hey there!

My class project is entitled Windows and Walls (although is mostly windows) because I got inspired to draw if after reading Yuanpu Huang's book "Windows and Walls: A life across China's 40 years". In it, the author reflects on his personal life and transformation as his own country went through a major transformation itself in the last 40 years.

What I liked most about it was the dual metaphor the author uses throughout the book, equating moments when he felt constricted by rules, laws, institutions, cultural or political structures as facing a wall that limited or prevented him from moving forward. While thinking of windows as those moments of opening when mobility is possible and we can peek into a different future for ourselves and the world around us, if not break through the other side of a wall.

After reflecting on my own experience, I came up with a few conclusions of my own. Sometimes windows are wide open, inviting us to explore new ways and possibilities:

But not every opening or opportunity is necessarily a good thing , windows can take us to bad places too:

Windows remain open only temporarily, opportunity won't last forever. AND windows not only connect us to our future, they also link us to our past, to places, memories and people that give us comfort and strenght. But places, memories and people from our past may change, be fogotten or die. Thus, closing a window shut, forever.

This is a tough one: some windows are tightly secured and designed to keep you out. These are windows you can peek through at best, but they are heavily guarded and reinforced by class, privilege, cultural background, creed and even race and ethnicity.

But sometimes a window can be barely cracked open, just about enought to let you sneak in:

As far as the technical aspects of the drawing I started with a pencil sketch that I later scanned and colored in Procreate using Nate's provided brushes, which are incredible, btw.

This was such a fun and informative class, thanks Nathan! Looking forward to the next one!
