Mermaid, Klimt-Style

I really enjoyed this project, though I'm not sure about the colors in my final painting.

Here are some rambling thoughts:

I chose to repeat Klimt's ovals, triangles, and waves, and to place the mermaid's head at an angle like the woman in "The Kiss". (The waves were almost meditative!) You can't see it very well in the scan, but I used Winsor & Newton gold ink and some really beautiful Japanese pearlescent paints that I haven't been able to use very much. (A little goes a very long way.)

There are a few points that might have improved the composition but I'm leaving it the way it is -- before I destroy it! It was challenging to balance the shapes, colors, and textures to make a good composition.

If I feel brave I may try to "lift" some of the dark colors in the center of the painting.

Here are some details from the painting. When I cut the painting into trading cards I was *not* happy with the black and white portion.  I chose to develop those cards, individually, into better compositions.

I made my trading cards into a little perfect-bound book. The purple foil (which tore, sadly) is a repurposed candy wrapper!
