ARTIST: Leigh Ellexson

Similarities:

• Both of the artists I mentioned in my case study uses colour in a very interesting way. They use multiple colours in the same spot and in my opinion it makes the piece very interesting.
• They also simplify their forms effectively into clear, readable shapes.
• While their styles appear flat, they still convey a strong sense of depth, the shapes themselves are flat, but the use of color creates dimension.

SELF INVENTORY: 

I enjoy experimenting with a variety of mediums in my work. For traditional pieces, I often combine gouache, colored pencils, and pastels, while I use Procreate for my digital art.

One of the biggest challenges in my practice is that my style shifts depending on the medium. For example, I use linework in digital pieces, but only sometimes in traditional drawings. Because of this variation, I’ve included both traditional and digital work in my self-inventory.

Recently, I completed a sketchbook as a way to explore my style. My goal was to experiment with as many mediums as possible and identify the elements that remain consistent across them, while also allowing myself to have fun. I approached the sketchbook playfully, giving myself the freedom to experiment, and most of the traditional work in my self-inventory comes from this project.
What I've found is that:

• I like to use multiple colours- as a gradient, but not linear- like my 2 inspirations.
• I like texture a lot. Analog mediums are very enjoyable to use for this reason.
• For now, I like to do finished pieces without lines/borders.
• My favourite subjects are landscapes, cute animals, trees, plants, flowers etc.
