I started by drawing a dandelion and some seeds:

I liked my drawing, but I wanted to experiment with using found objects instead, so I grabbed some dandelions from my yard and scanned them. Then I made an extremely rough, quick sketch for my layout:

I vectorized the scanned dandelions in Illustrator, arranged the motifs, and added color. Here is my finished pattern:
