Thank you so much for sharing this, Kris, and for such an honest reflection on the process. That alone tells me you were really engaged with the painting, not just trying to copy a reference. This is a beautiful result. The sense of place is very strong, and the church sits so naturally within the landscape. I really love how you handled the light and greenery, the yellows and fresh greens feel luminous and give the whole scene a joyful, sunlit atmosphere. The bridge and water work especially well together and lead the eye nicely into the painting. Masking fluid is definitely not for everyone, and you’re absolutely right: you don’t need to use it, or make a painting look exactly like the reference, for it to be successful. What matters is that it feels right to you. Your approach here feels confident and painterly, and it has its own character rather than looking forced or overworked. This is a strong piece, and you should feel very proud of it. Well done - and I’m really glad you enjoyed the class 😊

Thank you Chris you are gracious. Jeez,  I was a bit grumpy about this painting. I should refrain from commenting right after I finish.  I did use masking on the roof, the bridge, the water and a few taps into the trees I just couldn't do the tiny exact shapes. I struggle with waiting for things to dry and that says more about me than the tutorial. I find if I use a hair dryer when I mask things that the masking fluid sometimes bonds tighter to the paper and want to take a souvenier. or when masking fluid is removed and the paper not completely dry it damages the paper. My brain wants me to paint every line and I've worked to get away from that way and it has helped me to relax into the work of painting. This is a mixed media piece- I used a little pigment liner here and there and some soft dry pastel in those trees to get the highlights to pop. This is a technique I learned from an amazing artist named Paul Clark, who hails fro Great Britain and is also an amazing teacher like you.

Gorgeous, the trees look so good. Everything about it is working beautifully together. I'm really impressed with the church, I find architecture to be particularly challenging in watercolor, and you did an amazing job.

The Parish at St Sebastian is a gorgeous little church built in the 1500s. Ive never been there but I have seen images of it before. This was a fun class, I found it challenging and at times downright hard. I could not do the masking the way Chris showed it just isnt my way. I dont need it to look exactly like the photo reference. I can tell it looks like the other students work example and Im happy I completed it. Second attempt below, the church is less muddy, ZIm happies with it.
