I'm so happy you enjoyed the class, Jennifer! I'm blown away by your first charcoal portraits. Charcoal is wonderfully flexible but it can be a bit challenging to figure out when you're not used to it. Cheap set or not, You did such a great job!  I think you will love experimenting with the different kinds of charcoal. My favourite kind is the Art Chunkies by Cretacolor. They are quite big but so soft and pigmented. They have all kinds of earthy colours as well and you can buy them individually, so you can start out with the classic black one and see if you like it. I prefer them over pastels. Both dusty media, but so different to draw with.  I love that you jumped right in and chose such challenging reference photos. I love seeing your process. I also love that you created these patterns in their clothing! The art is in the details. ❤️

Thank you so much Jerney. I will definitely seek out the Art Chunkies. I am a colour person but there is really something in using just plain charcoal. I was amazed how much you can do with them. Looking forward to doing more.

Yay! Yes, black only is very good to get used to charcoal and focus on value and creating form.  The coloured charcoal is a wonderful next step. I never knew they existed before one of my patrons from the US surprised me with a whole box of them! It's been a long time, I should get them out in the near future. They are amazing on tan drawing paper. Have lots of fun on your drawing adventure, I'd love to see more!

Awesome! I think you'll like them. If things get too dusty, you can spray on some workable fixative, let it dry for about 5 minutes and then you can layer some more until you get a nice contrast. :)

The pleasure is mine, Jennifer. I love sharing my experience. I want you guys to soar and have fun! 😁 Yes! Just know that you'll have a difficult time to erase back into it after fixing your drawing. So it's better to do that when you just want to add more colour and contrast after you've figured out the form first.  But with the coloured charcoal I only layer and will end with highlights with white charcoal. :) Thank you so much for your beautiful compliment. ❤️

This class was so fun Jerney. I havent really used charcoal and the ones I have now are from my daughters  cheap kit. I will have to find some better charcoal and pencils etc.
