Invisible Writing

Easier to hold and write with, I used a white crayon - worked fine. Fun, especially if anyone figure out my secret theme.

Building Your Toolbox - 4 Boxes/1 Color

This felt playful and fun. Relaxing. I used these brushes:

  • filbert - still learning on this one, but I liked the way it made a little arc though supposed to do more.
  • large round (pointed) - great brush for a wash like above and many other jobs.
  • rake - lots of uses I don’t know about yet, but it does lots of nice pine trees and other botanical magic like grass.
  • deer-foot - another favorite for its textural work, but it does other task. I’ve used it in skies and for bark texture and field flowers in a meadow.

Focus on Shape: Squares (or Mixed Media or Both?)

Inspired By: Creative Prompt Cards - image 3 - student project

Half-way through I wondered if it was allowed to put squares at an angle with part “hidden” under another square. This started out fun, but I was tired by the time I got to it. I didn’t want to be a square about the art, so I included a variety from pencil to sparkly turquoise lace, collage pieces, part of a candy wrapper, some patterns and solids and several birds squares here and there. Tools included watercolor, acrylic, text, acrylic markers, Posca pens, black fine liner.

All the shapes are squares. Really. Some just wanted to hide a bit.

Confusion about Blobs vs. Monsters?

Inspired By: Creative Prompt Cards - image 4 - student project

These are both unfinished works and likely to remain so.

The one on the right started out to be blob monsters. The more I looked at them, the more I thought of the series of poems, “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell,” by the Romantic poet Blake. One side could be the dark and the other light.

Was I on the wrong track?  Had I conflated Blob Monsters with Blot Art?

So, I blob-painted the folks on the left and gave them red shoes. All members of that family are funky with the kid’s hair made by a rake brush. Since they were supposed to be blobs, I restrained myself from too many details but couldn’t resist Sunny-Boy’s pockets or Dad’s suspenders.

Finally, I looked at other examples of admirable Blob Monsters, and felt envy. These weren’t those.

Blot Art - not to be confused with "Blob Art"

My “Blot Art.” End of discussion. (LOL!!!)
