Ice Creams

I chose this class because I was struggling with drawing the shape of cones and ice cream in general. I’m glad the first part of the class included a lot of exercises—it really helped me get familiar with the topic.

When I first watched the videos, I wasn’t sure I could pull off the realistic style. I’d never really tried it before because I know I usually don’t have the patience for it. But the explanations and step-by-step process were so smooth that I was able to follow along and stay in the flow. I’m really happy with how it turned out:

Besides using masking fluid, I also experimented with a white coloured pencil that contains wax. I had heard about it but never tried it before and wanted to see how it worked. I messed things up a bit when I tried to remove the masking fluid—but that happens! With the coloured pencil, I was able to create more organic lines, which I actually prefer.

Blending pigment on clear water was a fun technique, and it worked especially well for painting the cone.
