For my reference, I chose a photograph of Naomi Campbell. Although this isn’t a traditional self-portrait, I was drawn to her strong features and iconic look. Following the course instructions, I focused on experimenting with color, shadow placement, and overall composition:

1. Reference and Inspiration

   • I started by analyzing the reference photo and deciding which elements I wanted to emphasize. Although I kept many of the original facial features, I incorporated stylized shapes and bold colors to showcase my own aesthetic.

2. Color Palette

   • In line with Laci Jordan’s recommendations, I explored various methods for choosing my palette (including looking at color swatches and using black-and-white images to determine shadow placement). Ultimately, I went for vibrant hues that highlight the portrait’s energy and make the illustration stand out.

3. Shadow Placement

   • One key technique from the course was converting the reference photo to black and white. This helped me see where the strongest shadows and highlights fell, allowing me to map them accurately in my digital piece.

4. Personal Style

   • Even though the final portrait is based on Naomi Campbell’s photo, I added elements that emphasize my personal style. The bold outlines, high-contrast shadows, and playful use of color are all part of my creative approach.

5. Outcome

   • The result is a striking digital illustration that merges my admiration for Naomi Campbell’s iconic features with my own artistic expression. Through this project, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how to use reference photos effectively, how to manage color choices, and how to create a piece that balances realism with personal flair.

Overall, this project allowed me to develop my illustration skills while experimenting with new techniques. I learned the importance of color theory, shadow placement, and the value of adding my own twist to a reference image. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that helped me cultivate my unique style and boost my confidence as a digital illustrator.
