I decided to tell a story about walking my dog in the rainy, UK weather as it’s been a constant in my life all January.I couldn’t perform the steps in this class which focus on Photoshop, however, I just used Procreate to create the repeat instead.

Initial storyboard and references

I initially decided that I wanted my story to start and end at home, with a few different scenes on the walk. I numbered the scenes 1-5 but then as I was sketching I added another scene just walking the dog as I felt this was an important part of the story, so in total there are 6 scenes I planned out.

 

Scenes

 

1st sketch

The first obstacle I came across was that I couldn’t fit all 6 scenes in the pattern. So I decided to ditch the last 2 home scenes, and just focus on the fun of the walk instead and use 4 scenes. I like how the front door scene doubles as both the beginning and the end of the walk. The second obstacle was that the scale of the scenes were too large and didn’t flow correctly. Finally, some of the scenes were too busy. 

 

2nd Sketch

In the second iteration, I scaled down the scenes and spaced them out. There is more room to breathe in the pattern now, and more distance for the dog walk. I also removed the tree from behind the brick wall as it was over powering. I like the flow and how the figures move in different directions, as my real walks with my dog are certainly not linear.

 

Final sketch

I added in some filler elements like rain clouds and grass tufts. The clouds are a stamp tool I’ve created for my own brush sets.

 

1st pattern iteration

In this first piece I took heavy influence from the initial inspiration, limited colour pallets and outlined graphic style. I chose a blue colour to resemble the rainy weather and chose a pale orange background to complement the blue.

 

2nd pattern iteration

For this design I decided to fully saturate the piece with colour and blocked out elements. I chose a blue base colour pallet, with a couple of warmer, contrast colours.
