Wonderful, Carmen. You truly captured the beauty of how the moss hangs on the trees in the rainforests of the Northwest. I watched the video and will attempt the painting soon. I think I might just use my initials on my pastel paintings as you do, as it is quite difficult for me to write my full name, haha!

Thanks Diana...maybe you have pastel pencils in your collection and can sign your name that way.  I don't have any pastel pencils but I thought I had ordered some but turned out it was just "pastel colored " pencils.

Carmen this is fantastic!  You did an excellent job on the moss on the branches.  You captured the texture wonderfully.  that’s not easy with less than ideal supplies.  I like your colour choices.  The bark is great!  Your skill is there and I would say the thing holding you back now is primarily the paper choice.  Try experimenting with some construction sandpaper as it’s very budget friendly.  if you can get your hands on some Pastelmat or Uart I suspect you would surprise yourself with just how good you are.

Carmen, I agree with Heather—this looks wonderful. I believe that, just like with watercolor, the choice of paper is the most important factor, perhaps even more than the watercolor itself. I’m currently working on Heather’s Robin pastel using sandpaper. I ordered some 400 grit sandpaper from Amazon, and it arrived yesterday. It is definitely better to use than the paper I tried the other day. The only issue I encountered is that I can't blend with anything except my finger, as everything else I used seemed to erase the pastel. Last night, I noticed that my finger had a burn on it from all the rubbing. This morning, I had a few minutes to work on it, and I used a glove for blending. It’s not ideal, but I’m sure it will save my finger! After working with the sandpaper, I realized that I do enjoy painting with pastels, so I splurged and bought a pack of Pastelmat on Amazon. Ouch, it’s expensive! It will arrive on Wednesday, but I’m not sure when I’ll feel brave enough to try painting on it. Maybe I should practice some more on the sandpaper first.  I hope you do more with pastel.  I know I will. :)

Thanks Diana...well I will use up my "cheap paper" first but will check if anything goes on sale.  I did love the tree class. I will still do the birdie as well.  Is nice to try so many different things..

I love to read how you are both digging in on the pastel painting.  Diana you will be very happy to know the Pastelmat is smooth.  I painted a horse once on Uart and my fingers were definitely feeling the burn.  The higher the grit you choose with sandpaper the less painful the process but I think the 400 grit grabs the pastel very well. The good news is I only blend backgrounds and once you get over that part you are free to just apply layers.  I was messing around on 600 grit sandpaper today for a beginner class and it was decent.  I definitely can’t get the kinda layers I can achieve on Pastelmat but it does the job.  That might be an option for you as well Carmen.  It’s so reasonably priced.  Diana I hope you crack out the Pastelmat and try it as soon as it arrives.  I admit I’ve been known to just stare at new art supplies and not touch them.  lol You can actually wash off your work and start over once it’s dry.   it’s actually awesome for practicing because it’s reusable. 

Carmen, I hope something goes on sale for you soon! So many times, it's thanks to you that I've branched out and tried so many different mediums, and yes, I love it, too! I'm looking forward to seeing your bird as well! :) Thank you, Heather, for responding to both of us. I have been following Carmen since I joined Skillshare because she is a seasoned artist whose work I admire, and I appreciate her witty sense of humor. Knowing what you said about Pastelmat being user-friendly, I'm excited to get started on it once it arrives. I will probably finish my robin pastel on the sandpaper tomorrow, and when I post it, I will detail my experience with it. :)

This is cool, Carmen! Especially like the texture of the green on the trees, And those twisty branch shapes are perfect.

I could not say majestic but is my humble childlike version using my cheap supplies.
