Drawing Landscapes With Charcoal: Texture & Distance

This looks great Robert! You've captured the bright lighting well. The sense of depth in this drawing is working nicely too due to the values and textures you've used in the background and foreground. I'd perhaps add just a few 'wispy' or slightly lighter thinner branches to the main branches of the trees on the left. Because these are closer than the others we can expect them to have a bit more detail than the ones on the right. You could sharpen a piece of Nitram and use it on its tip to add some thinner branches coming off those thicker main ones or to add some lighter texture for leaves. Don't go overboard and feel free to leave it as is, its just a small suggestion to bring some difference to the trees that are closer to the viewer. Thanks for sharing your work! Emily

I used Nitram charcoal in various grades for this project (about 10” x 7”). I’m new to charcoal and look forward to trying these techniques on my own photos.
